A couple days ago one of the yellowjacket tooth holders came a little loose and my guy kept using the machine. The bolt eventually broke and you can see how the holes are now a little oblong.

I plan on having these holes filled and redrilled (good idea? Bad idea?). However, in the mean time can I use the machine without a tooth here or is the wheel off balance?

This might give me an excuse to buy one of those rhino wheels but I am not sure I want to spend the coin since my 6 month worker's comp bill is coming up.

Filled and redrilled should work, you might be able to find a sleeve at tsc and put it
in the hole, you may have to drill out the hole to match sleeve, do not run machine
without pocket, will be out of balance for sure, happenned to me once, the controls
started shaking, i chkd right away and retorqued pocket, caught it in time..

Thanks, Bob. What is tsc?

I did try running it in my yard after I posted this and man did it wobble. Gonna have to use the alpine magnum tomorrow until I can get this thing fixed.

I am thinking about getting into stump grinding as my main deal (I'd probably also contract climb and do arborist consults). How you like focusing on just grinding?

Right now I am running a 4 man crew most days and payroll and worker's comp is just costing me so much. All I do is manage and go on sales to keep my guys going. Thinking of selling all of my bigger equipment and most of my saws. I'll just keep the 2 grinders, my f350 pickup, and a couple saws and climbing gear.

That way making 300 bucks a day grinding with little over-head would be great for me... Instead of having to make 15-16 hundy+ per day to make a profit.

I dunno. Did you start out this way and later go into grinding? How you like it? I think I'll post something similar to this in the commercial forum and see what those guys think too.

You can remove a set of teeth and holders, however you must also remove the teeth and holders from the opposite side of the wheel to mantain the balance of the wheel. Many years ago i had a wheel with oblong holes that I saved by using 5/8" I.D. Drill Stops (Harbor Frieght) and had the holes in the wheel drilled out to match the O.D. of the drill stops. Press the drill stops into the holes and you have a good wheel.

Exactly what i was thinking using bushing inserts from tractor supply, same principal as
u suggest,,,,good suggestion....good idea to check the torque on pockets about once a
week or so to prevent this happenning, i learned the hard way....

tsc....tractor supply co...

Retired 7 yrs ago and started a mowing and stump grinding business, quit the mowing this
year, doing both got to be too much for this old man, do just grinding now and it keeps
me busy, do jobs for 4 diff tree services and they keep me busy, plus call in jobs...

Stump grinders are high maint machines, u must pm the regularly or u will start having
expensive problems, check out plyscamps response to ur orig question, u can do a
search regarding sc252's and it will give u lots of info, my wife and i run the business i
grind and she fills the holes, in my opinion stump grinding is a one person show, i
could not afford to pay help and make any money, but it works for me...your most
important pc of equip is a big chain saw, the bigger the better LOL..

Hope this helps...

There is 3 optional wheels for stump grinders that do not have those PIA holes drilled in the wheel. I will never go back to any system that has bolts running through the side of the wheel to secure the teeth. Optional systems are Rhino, Multi Tip and Sandvik.
