Said i would post update on use of my sc252..

Did my first stumps today, 3 large oak stumps, took waaaay too long when compared to my pto grinder, but i expected that...

Allmost turned it over on me, smoked the drive belt, and clutch belts are squealing, will check adjustments tomorrow, got books on grinder today from vermeer so they ans a lot of my questions, have to re-torq teeth bolts, i did not have them any where near tight enough but they did not come loose...

Overall learned a lot, very exciting day to say the least, thinking about going to the greenteeth as they are so much easier to change, any thoughts on which ones i should get, standard or deep dish..

I was not prepared for all the chips going under the machine as my pto grinder threw them out front, after i figured it out that i had to back the machine up and fill in the hole some and then go back forward, things started to go much better, so overall a good day learned a lot..

Any suggestions regarding use of machine would be appreciated..

Also i don't have a gauge for the belts, any advice on setting them ???

Thanks much...

Bob,

First, not sure why you had to back up, fill the hole and go back forward. Yes, the machine will 'fall down in' a little but it should still drive forward. You just raise the head higher when repositioning forward on the stump.

Greenteeth work great on a 252. I use the 1100 red deep dish. I believe they recommend the smaller 700 red deep dish tooth now and they have the newer low profile pockets whereas mine are the old style.

belt deflection should be about 1/2" The tool they include with new machines for checking belt tension is dumb in my opinion. You just push down with a reasonable amount of force and deflection should be around the height of the belt or 1/2". That's how I do it and it works fine.

252s are actually fairly stable once you learn to turn the head uphill on slopes or when jumping a curb, etc. Just a few tricks of the trade that come with experience. I must admit, I dumped one once but luckily it was a rental when I first started out. :D Haven't dumped my own machine and am very cautious not to do so.

I've never used a pto grinder. I know they're fast because of the direct drive. Certainly much faster than a hydraulic grinder. That said, the 252 is a very productive machine once you get some hours under your belt. And, once you get some hours under your belt, you can disable the autosweep if it isn't already and that will double your productivity. Good to get a feel for the controls first though before doing so. Also, it will really make you appreciate the machine for it's true potential if you've operated it both with and without the autosweep.

Good luck with it,

AP

Thx for help..

Thx for the advice arbor pro,,,much appreciated...

Machine has auto sweep but does not work, so learning without it..

Will chk belt settings now that you have told me how to do it...

I hope i did not damage drive belt too much, i got it pretty hot and
it started smoking, got wheel jammed and panicked LOL..should not
happen once i get more familiar with the controls..

I put new teeth on, the 1/2 sq ones, left them stick out about 1 inch
as i did not know setting, but did not torq them enough, but luckily
they did not come loose and they cut fine, i am going to leave them on
to get some use out of them and then switch over to the greenteeth..

Overall i am happy with the machine, and looking fwd to learning how
to use it correctly, there was a learning curve with the pto grinder
also, but i did thousands of stumps with it and got really good but it
was just too hard on the tractor and i could not afford to step up to
a larger series tractor, too old to go that far in debt LOL...

Going into vermeer dealer today (60 miles) to get some info and prices
on items, mainly the dual wheel option...

Thx again for the info.

Use update..

Well have some updates on 252 use so far...

Have done about 10 stumps,,,did 3 very large red oak stumps
yesterday, took about 6 hrs, but money was good, and learned
a lot, double the time it would have taken with the pto grinder
tho, something i will just have to learn to live with..

After using now i like the way the chips are thrown back under
the grinder, u allways have a clear stump to work on, not having
any trouble like i was at first with squealing the belts..

Put on a new main grinder wheel belt, not that hard at all, the
hydraulic filter vibrated loose and i lost all my hyd fluid, nobody
had any iso 100 like vermeer recommends so put in 68 wt to
finish the job and went to vermeer to get the iso100,,,WOW,
90.00 for 5 gallons, going to change it out tomorrow, also
putting on a new filter...

So overall i am happy with the grinder, just have to adjust to
the additional time it takes on the large stumps, i am sure
the greenteeth or yellow jacket teeth will help also, and once
i learn some tricks on the large stumps, it will improve the
time i am taking to grind them...

Have a great weekend everybody...:biggrinbounce2:
