my grinder has been acting up this week. When grinding it began bouncing on the wood and sometimes the wheel would slow up & stop completely. The belts would smoke and slip. So I thought that I needed new belts. Replaced new belts. Ground out 2 stumps ok. 3rds stump. Started slipping again, but I just dabbed at to try and finish. Got it about 90% done and the wheel stopped turning.

Turned machine off, then back on and tried to flip switch for clutch. The wheel turned at about 1 mph, just barely turning.

This sound like a clutch to you guys?

was it the belts slipping and smoking ?? or the clutch smoking ???? if it was the belts smoking,, means the clutch was working,,and something is wrong in the drive to the wheel....try turning the wheel by hand... sould turn pretty freely....if not,, the problem is in the drive....check for something wrapped around the shaft by the wheel... picked up wire before,,,wrapped around the shaft....take belt cover off,, start machine,,,, pulley on clutch should spin,, center of clutch should not move... engage,, center should spin as fast as the pulley...have someone watch while grinding,,,if the wheel stalls and the clutch is still spinning,,, its a drive probalem.... if the wheel stalls,, and the center of the clutch stops spinning,,, clutch is shot... where in jersey are you???

Buddy, my 352 did the same thing twice the other day.

workin on a 72" live oak stump. Doin' great-as a matter of fact, I was impressed w/my time.

Suddenly, smoke from the belt housing, & wheel stopped. It had slung the belts. They are fairly new, maybe 30 hrs. And they were tight. I had to move my engine back to the end of the adjustment & "turn" 'em over the pulleys to get 'em on.

Put 'em back, & did fine for about 10 mins, no smoke, but slung again. No wheel spin(obviously).

Put them back, & it did fine. Finished the job, & have done another one since, w/no probs.

Still can't figure what caused those belts to sling off.

my belts didnt come off just ended up spinning on the pullies and smoking when trying to grind more than a very little bite. Belts are still spinning as they appear fine when not under a load. but somehow the cutter wheel isnt turning now. like juststumps said its either the clutch or drivetrain.

Its at the shop now.

pm'ed you back...

check this out,,, this happened to the one at work.... between the upper and lower gear box, there is a short drive shaft with 2 u joints...lower gear box is splined and the upper has a key way and a shear pin..the key way and the shear pin both failed on the upper u joint.. same symptom,,, wheel will turn from drag,, but not under load... have to replace the upper yoke and put a new pin in,,, hope this helps.

oh, and as for the smoking belts,, i could imagine if in fact it is the yoke that failed... the drive shaft could have started locking up while turning from the one end cocking over from sliding down with out the shear pin holding it up off the lower gear box... probably started smokeing somewhere betwwen the shear pin failing and stopped after total destruction of the yoke..the keyway in the yoke was total hammered out when i saw the work machine apart in the shop..

thanks for the replies guys. will let you know what the mechanic finds this week.

the shear pin failing and stopped after total destruction of the yoke..

this was it. pin snapped. replaced. yoke is fine. got machine back. had it on a job today. thank you for your help!

next I need a new set of teeth or may buy that Leonardi M1 or Sandvik wheel...decisions..thoughts/input?

I have the sandvik wheel and very happy with it--Don't know much about the m1 but it seems to me that if you chip one side of tooth you have to throw the whole thing away---and it doesn't look very heavy--in my experience weight helps---hope i helped:dizzy:

My 352 will sometimes slow and bounce with some belt smoke also,,,,,but i think it is due to grinding with the bottom of the wheel and not the front. If you look at the manuel,,it shows you not to use the bottom part of the wheel,, only the front portion......just my 2 cents worth.

New here...just recently purchased a used sc352 with 355 hours..while grinding a stump yesterday. The wheel came to an abrupt stop and sounded like the belts were squealing. Disengaged the wheel, restarted the machine. tried to engage the wheel and nothing..any thoughts. Thanks!
