Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Almost forgot an on topic thing: I moved some oak firewood to my girlfriend’s home last Friday. It was from a huge oak that fell on the rail trail last spring and shattered. It was so dry here for so long that the wood was well dried and it burns well… if not too fast!

I did some chores while there… installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system for one. I cannot seem to get away from plumbing!

Ugg... don't remind me about plumbing. I still need to feed the pex line out to the shop, and I have to fix/redo all the pipes from the pressure tank to the filters in the house. It works, but it's a cobbled up mess of pvc, cpvc, and pex A. I'm pretty sure I have most everything laying around to fix it as well, just been putting it off since it works, even if it's an ugly mess.

Glad I never checked ... just used a little solar powered one I got at TS. Was not that expensive. I don't think any of my neighbors even noticed it, and you could always claim "ignorance", I'm sure it is not the most serious thing they deal with.

I've got too many eyes around me... A change in neighbors over the years is the problem. I have considered some landscape plantings to block the view of the garden from the troublesome direction. Just what to plant is an issue as I don't want to block the sun by planting them too close to the vegetables. If I plant them much further away though they will be shaded by a big maple and/or chestnut. A row of now 30'+ tall, tightly spaced, arborvitae took care of the other troublesome side of my corner property. I long for being surrounded by former dairy farms like during my youth!

I'm actually dreading the thought of my jerk neighbors wife selling their place off. Only good thing with him being around was I didn't have to worry about a developer buying it out. Not so sure with his wife and daughter at the helm now. I've seen his son-in-law recently and asked him, and he said they hadn't made up their mind, but if they do sell they want someone to buy all 3 properties. He did say they weren't making any final decisions till the property was cleaned up and all Richard's junk was gone. Hopefully I see Judy (Richard's wife) and get to ask her if she would sell the 1/2 acre lot next to my place separately. It was originally part of my property, but for unknown reasons was sold off to Richard and Judy in the early 2000's by the people that put the house up. (I really think they ran into financial issues, shortly after the property was sold, they sold the house.)

You should load that .25-06 with some 75 gr V Max. Should push them to 3700-3800. I'm loading mine with those for 'yotes.

Well CSX let one of it's specialty scheme locomotives wander out into the Upper Midwest again, and I was able to get it yesterday. CSXT 4568 with the "50th Anniversary Operation Lifesaver" scheme leads 2 other CSX units with a loaded fertilizer train past the new rail served grain terminal going up along BNSF's St. Croix Subdivision in western WI heading for North Dakota. Although the wind didn't stop gusting the sun came out briefly and the random bursts of snow quit long enough for the train to come through.

Being surrounded on 3 sides by woods is just an open invitation. Also up until a year or 2 ago we had 4-6 outside cats so there was little to no issues with mice. But the cats declined down to 1 up until a month ago (hit by car, wandered off/or carried off due to predators) then about 2 weeks ago a stray showed up but more than likely was dumped off as it's been trying sneak into the house every time I bring the food out. That one and my current cat have started to tolerate each other finally, as the new one tried to make itself the "dominant" one but I've also had to intervene a few times. I have boxes with old towels/blankets in them covered by old blankets with an old sleeping bag over them on the covered porch for the cats to sleep in at night and a heated water dish.

A long barrel and CB longs isn't noticeable in an urban setting... the ambient noise level masks the shot. A guy I know lived in a close urban neighborhood. He would shoot chucks in his backyard and never had any problems... They were causing damage to his buildings and plantings and annoyed his dog.

That was the last of the mulberry I just split last month. Going to try to get it restacked before the noon rain starts. I have more garden work to do this week before my duck season starts next Saturday and I certainly don't have the time to re-do things.

In NY, it is illegal to relocate wild animals as that can spread disease. In addition, if I don't want the darn thing around, I figure no one else does either. Also, there is no shortage of these animals, so if you try to relocate it, you are just going to displace another one.

As a result, I have concluded to "Just have the guts to do what has to be done and dispatch it".

Woodchucks are the worst! They multiply fast, will go over a fence or dig under a fence, and will wipe out your whole garden in a few hours. The electric fence seems like the only effective deterrent for them.

One time I did have to eradicate one with the 22 from my deck. I did it on the 4th of July and no one noticed!

Years ago over at the farm my FIL had a few groundhogs. I backed my 8N over one of the holes and ran a vacuum hose from the muffler into the hole. I would put a big rock over the exit hole where I saw smoke coming out. We eradicated every one of them without firing a shot. That 8N sure did burn oil.

When we had the farm, years ago, we tried that method with our 8N. Groundhogs were burrowing into the dam. Never did see any smoke.

Now when I find a new hole in the Spring, I pour used oil down the hole and they move on. When out in the oven, I give them a 22 cc dose of lead.

I got a Beeman P1 from them. It’s more accurate than my Colt Gold Cup and Kimber Gold Match .45s and a LOT cheaper to shoot. The downside of it’s inherent accuracy is I cannot blame the gun if the 10 meter groups aren’t tight.

I know where you’re coming from . I just like the idea of being able to walk in and get the ammo for the air rifle and walk out I can also order online just much easier all around. They have air rifles that take down deer so the power is there .

Have you considered CCI St. Velocity .22lr? It's actually quieter than air rifles, sub sonic velocity.

Good to have buddies! My son's buddy came over with a mini-excavator to dig the hole for the new dry well and to correct a swale... Best $100 I've spent in a long time!
