Sealed over topping injury

Greetings, will be removing hangars and deadwood from a tree with old topping wounds that have wound wood growing all the way around them with sprouts a growing from them. What would you recommend doing to these parts if anything at all? Thanks.

re the sprouts, gilman recommends removing 1/3 (the weakest), reducing 1/3, leaving 1/3, to restore the crown.

then find the guy who topped it and shove his saw up his...:chainsawguy:

You can't do much more harm to that old Sycamore. Think out a few years to what you want it to look like and start pruning with that in mind. Take a look at the crown as a whole. Remove the weak sprouts, leave the dominants and reduce the remaining.
