can crankshaft seals be removed &replaced without spliting the case, husky 266. ?? what seals the case halves gasket or magic goop. most manuf. manuals try to discourage owners by listing many special tools and long procedures. ---thanks frank

Frank-

Take a small flat bladed screwdriver, like a carb tuning screwdriver, and grind the sides of the blade down until the blade almost comes to a point. Use that and some elbow grease to pop your seals out. If they're really old smear some vaseline all around them ( no joke ) and apply some heat with a heat gun or a hair dryer. If they're really stubborn then use a small hammer with your modified screwdriver and drive it through the metal part of the seal. This modified little screwdriver works great for popping out wrist pin retainers too.

Got a screwdriver like that, pretty handy.

Another way is to drill a small hole in the metal of the seal and use a sheet metal screw to pull the seal. It was my preffered method untill I got the Stihl seal puller. Expensive, but worth it for the shop.

Be careful when drilling, stay shallow, and careful not to scracth the crank with the screwdriver.

Im another fan of the seal puller. works like a charm.........

Have you guys tried grinding a larger flat-bladed screwdriver concave for installing the long chain brake return spring on stihls? It makes it a snap. You use the concave part as a fulcrum on that post where the back of the spring locks onto.

stihl sells a tool real similar to what your talking about...

Normally I`d buy the factory tool also because they often make the job easier and I take some personal pride in my tools, but with what Stihl charges for tools I`ll make my own anywhere I can. Those of you who know me know that it`s not that I can`t afford them, I just won`t willfully submit to rape.

BTW, small pump packing pullers, the type with the corkscrew tip, work well.

i had a seal go bad once. wouldn't play the horns or balance the ball on his nose any more. fixed that with multiple blows of a screwdriver much like the one described above.
(sorry. i just had to) marty

Hey Marty, it reminds me of this joke: An Eskimo in the Yukon comes back into town after a winter of trapping and takes his snowmobile into the shop cause it ain't runnin' right. The mechanic says, " give me about 45 minutes, go for lunch and I'll check out your machine".
About an hour later the Eskimo returns and the mechanic says, " it looks like you blew a seal". The Eskimo replies as he wipes his mouth with his sleeve, " oh no, not at all, just a bit of mayonaise".
