My shop yard is off the grid, so I have no access to constant ac electricity and we've been having little things go missing here and there. I thought it was in my head, a length of transport chain missing, a couple rolls of quarters from a bike saddlebag, but then someone came in and stole the wheel off my wheelbarrow. Now I know I'm not crazy!

I was thinking of putting these up http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200578633_200578633

Another option is to use hunting cameras. any ideas folks?

Solar charged game camera would be a better choice. That camera is to visible. A solar panel separate from the camera seems like a good idea.
I have several cameras set up on my place. None are easily seen, there are a few dummies that can be seen along with signs saying "you're on camera".

I'm not moving my yard homie. It's as cheap and cheap can be. I own the land.

I am going to try one of the ones above I posted and a game camera as a redundancy. I think one of each kind would cover my arse.

In remote areas like your yard, you want the camera to be as invisible as possible, or else they'll steal it too. I use a rather expensive game camera. Has black light for night photos. No sounds, no lights. Daylight pics are in color. Night pics are black n white. It takes timed pics, as well as sensor activated pics. You choose how many pics to take when the sensor is triggered. Takes 12 AAA batteries. I use Energizer ULTIMATE Lithium. They last a long time. Also two 4GB SD Cards which holds thousands of pics each, in case you only check on it twice a month. Just swap them out, and keep it rollin. My PC detects the SD card and allows me to view all it pics.

Yeah I've used expensive blackout game cameras to keep an eye on my other cheaper cameras that started disappearing. Booby trapping a few worked the best tho. Plunged out a square recess eye level in a box elder tree then inserted a can of pepper spray. Pounded in a nail to keep a spring in place above the trigger, and a washer that seperated the two. Tied a string to the washer and game camera so when the camera was ripped off the tree the washer was pulled out and trigger depressed. I think it worked! When I came back, cam was laying on the ground and pepper spray was empty. I reloaded it and it didn't get touched again.

Now there's an idea I like!

I've had some luck using brinno time lapse cameras. Downside is they record all the time, and take photos at 1 sec intervals so playback is boring you can speed it right up. They also don't work at night. They're not too expensive though and you can use them for putting time lapse videos on the web. Those game cameras are pretty cool and the better ones will actually text you the images if they get set off.

How far is your home from this yard? A Dakota Alert MURS system might be right for ya. (has to be monitored)
I was looking at the same solar powered camera as you but read some reviews, "complete failures to trigger" "cam activates up to 10 secs after detection" "time stamp wrong and cant be changed" "only importer info on box, no way to contact manufacturer with gripes". Takes descent video I understand.
Registration building at my paintball field got robbed and smashed up a week ago. Think I'll go with trail cameras in bird houses and a rat trap pressure switch rigged to battery and car horn.
The camera defended with Mace is great but would land me in jail. (New York State) Would like to mark the troubled youth with used motor and gear oil. Hmm,.. some chimney pipe, a bowling ball... - I better get out my Wile E. Coyote black board.
Of course, then I'll get nailed by the DEC, Child Welfare, Al Gore and a dozen more.
Storage containers are very secure with quality locks. My friends concrete business wont work in Buffalo with out them.

I do use a shipping container. Two of them. They get locked up but I'm just wary of people coming in, sneaking around, and swiping stuff that i don't lock up. Like chains and binders, wheelbarrow tires.

I have an idea of who stole my wheelbarrow tire. Some kids that have been snooping around. Two boys, now I just need to find their house.

Wheelbarrow tire - Was one kid tubby and the other scrawny with his hair pointed with goop? Accompanied by a white bull terrier with a black ring around the eye? Hang out with a chick named Darla?
Must be a soapbox derby race coming to town.

Life is too short to go stalking after boys and finding out where they live due to a missing wheelbarrow tire.

No. It's not guy. Because it starts with a tire, then leads to smashed windows or party spot. Or leads them talking to someone who would put some effort into actually stealing something of value. Been there for years and the only problem we had was a guy came in before I had my biz and stole 20k worth of granite from my family with a machine.
