I reckon you're physically fit or you wouldn't be out there. What do you patrol, a recreation area?

Woooooooooo!

Ski patrol!

Sugar mt. alum here.

I don't know if you have to be in good shape to patrol or not, a lot of our guys just sit in the summit house and eat/ play with there phones.

Enjoy your season and lots of freshies to you!

Worked at Whistler/Blackcomb approx. 25 years ago (actually just Blackcomb back then, they were separate companies then).

Drove a snowcat in the evenings and volunteered with the paid patrol guys during the day.

Lots of good times.

Enjoy it.

well; my curiosity got the best of me, so I looked up ski patrol.
Most of what I found was volunteer duty, consisting of out-of-pocket registering, books, training, uniforms, dues, equipment, medical packs, etc. No income for them, just lots of expense and training. Didn't find much on those who actually get paid. But looks like the pay is not relevant in this type of work.

That'd be like a man who's so eager to cut firewood, goes out and buys some new saws, woodsplitter, axes, and accessories, hardhats, few pairs of chaps, 1st aid kits, a new truck , trailer, and log loader, and gives the wood away free.

sort of. I make ~$10 an hour to ski & drive a snowmobile M-F. My wife and kids get seasons passes, I get a pair of skis, never wait in lift lines, help people who get hurt, that sort of thing.

Your analogy would be more valid if millions of people paid large dollars to recreationally cut wood for fun and enjoyment. :)

VERY good point there squad143. Lots of folks from around here head for the snow for a week of skiing.
This really happened once.
A preacher I know took some of his congregation for a week of skiing. 1st morning up on the top, all ready to ski, were being given instructions when a woman kept interrupting saying she had to GO!.

Finally the instructor pointed to a clump of pines off to the right, and away she went, as he held the groups attention on the slopes.

Suddenly they heard this scream from the pines, and down the slopes went this beautiful nude woman squatting on her skies, and her blue jumpsuit down around her feet. The instructor caught up with her half way down the slope. She was so embarrassed she didn't come out of her room all week. Finally; their last morning, they talked her into coming down for breakfast.

The group gathered at a large table, and another guy sits nearby. He had his arm in a sling, so the preacher, making conversation, inquired of the man's injury. He said earlier in the week he was skiing down the slope when this naked woman passed him, and he hit a tree, and broke his arm.

A lot of the smaller ski hills rely solely on volunteer patrollers. Most of the larger resorts use full time paid patrollers mixed with volunteers during the busier days.

When you volunteer, yes you are working for free, but your mainly skiing, something you'd be paying for anyways. Season's passes can be as high as $1,700.

As Stayalert mentioned, you don't have to wait in lift lines (sometimes over a 30 min wait), first on the mountain (fresh tracks) and last off the mountain. This translates into a heck of a lot more skiing, even if you factor in the odd medical call.

I loved being a ski bum......

Unfortunately I had to grow up :)
