You gotta love one of the comments at the bottom of that page...

By the way, our forest manage themselves just fine - they were here before us, and maybe if we quit cutting them down, they'll be here long after us.
:monkey: Has this person never heard of Native Americans? Fire? Windstorms? Insect infestations?

The popular view of America as a pristine wilderness when Columbus sailed the ocean blue is flawed.

2 things: first, I didn't know the Navy had a forester at Bangor; I should probably get in touch with him. Second, that looks like a project that could become a Gold Standard if it's managed and spun right. FSC certification is a must. If public land is to be managed semi-commercially for the first time, it's extremely important to give the public the impression that it's being done "right", and to maintain transparency regarding policy and practice. Public ignorance is the biggest threat to forest health.

I got married at Illahee state park under a monster old growth. And when I was a young squid in the Navy onboard the USS Alabama at Bangor, you could go down on the lower base and find other large trees, but nothing compared to the giant stumps from the 1880’s that are still there. I tried to take my kids down there a few years ago but after 9-11, the base got all spooky about people being down there.
