Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster but more on me later!

Ive been cutting and heating with wood for a couple years now, but recently the state came in and cut down my neighbors tree line and was just gonna put diesel fuel on it and burn it all, I told them I would take it and they brought it onto my property with a skidster and ive been selling it since.

My question to you guys is what would the best options for me to get a semi load delivered to my house would be? what are the steps I should take to find a logger? This is all new to me so I wanted to ask some veterans in the game how you have acquired your loads?

I did what your doing. Blogged on AS and got a list of names. The first 20 cord load was great, and I got about sixteen cord of beautiful Oak firewood. The second load I got from the same guy looked short when he pulled in, and processed out to 12-13 cord. Went back on line and asked again, did a search of others in the same boat, and found one that stood out a bit. Guys dad bought from him for years, since he was a kid. I've been happy with every load since from Chris Muma, Gaylord, MI.
I suspect your state bids forestry contracts for harvesting timber. Perhaps if nothing else shakes out you could pursue something like that for a lead.
Good luck.

I'm posted up on Craigslist looking specifically saying I need it DELIVERED and everyone thats been responding lives 2 hours away, doesn't know how much they have, how much they want and want me to pick it all up. The struggle is real. Lol

If you can't find a logger or trucker to work with start checking tree services. They're looking for money this time of year. Work is down and equipment payments continue too, each month all winter. Post something on local party store, grocery store and gas station bulletin boards. Same with small companies that do road improvements. Check with the county road commission office near you for leads. They often subcontract tree work, because their men often lack the skill or equipment to do it efficiently, and often simply don't have the man hours needed to cover the additional work when it needs done.

These two trucks run three hours each way, but they are not doing it for anything less than a full load.

There's a guy in New Carlisle, IN that runs a Craigslist ad about this time of year when the ground freezes and they can drag out logs without muddying them up. He has a dump truck and sells fence row clearing logs full of locust, oak and cherry for a couple hundred bucks they do clearing work on farms. IIRC I paid him $300.00 for the last load a few years back plus a little extra for fuel as it was a long trip and got easily 18+ cords out of it and I'm still burning the last of it.

I'll look and see if that ad is up yet, I could use another load this year and I lost his number on an old phone that went away some time ago.

I'd love to see how 18 cords fit in a dumptruck. That's around 45 tons of wood!

Right, I think he made a total of three trips to get it all dumped hence the extra $$ for fuel they load on site for free but delivery is extra. The wood is darn near free they torch whatever they can't get rid of.

When trying to find that city up on Craigslist, what city should I be in if that makes sence
South Bend CL was where that ad used to be, I looked this am and it wasn't posted yet I could use another load of logs myself but a couple of the guys we used to split it with are holding down the fire in the heavens now so I can't use near as much of it.

Where are you in state? You'll find more information here from people that know your area. Just North of the State line in Buchanan MI there's a clearing operation been going on for awhile to expand the County dump I see piles of logs there you could probably get.

Check Craigslist for people selling log length. I also call local saw mills and ask if they sell log length or know anyone who does. You're guaranteed to meet a number that way. Otherwise just drive around locally and look for skidders, log trucks and landings. I've stopped at my fair share of landings and asked if they sell log length. Most of the time I left with a phone number as they were behind on their deliveries at the time.
