need help setting points on a 028. how do you set the gap when the points cam is on the flywheel? and what should the armeture air gap be? i have set a lot of points on briggs, tecumseh, ect but first time i have seen this type of setup. thanks jim

understand 2.1 before TDC. but where do you measure from to get the .35 pointgap when fly wheel is off. the cam lobe is made to the under side of the flywheel.

I'd suggest you convert it to electronic trigger. The little module cost less than $10 (not from Stihl, thats is over $30 - almost any "lawn mower" conversion module works), and it just screws in beside the coil. Snip the wire to the points, put it on the module, run an wire back to the coil and it's done. No need to mess with the flywheel position setting on the 028.

It's a pain. You need a tool, which I made from an old flywheel by cutting away most of the flywheel and using the center section. See my prior reply "convert to electronic".

thanks Lakeside53 and Stihl 041 super, all ready put a new set of points in it. used the timing mark on flywheel and block (just above coil). unbolted the coil so it would not be grounded and put a timing light light (one i had made from old flashlight for seting tecnmseh points) on coil kill wire and one on block for ground. when light just starts to come on timing marks should be alined. regaped flywheel and coil at .010 and every thing seems to be ok. Lakeside53 where can i find the electronic triggers you talk about. and yes the one from stihl is $28 but they were out of them. i checked, thanks again
