Hi all, I'm new here! Same price, which one should I buy? Also, can these saws be switched over to 3/8 pitch chain?
thanks,
Bundy

488 vs. 446s:
488 Proven workhorse, 446s relatively new
488 Slightly more powerful than the 446s, (3.5 vs. 3.1 horsepower)
488 Accepts longer bar than the 446s (20 inches vs. 18 inches)
488 Heavy-duty air filtration available, not for 446s
446s is lighter than the 488, (10.1 lbs vs. 9.9 lbs)

Sort of depends on your needs, the 488 is an all-round proven good saw. The 446s is a great saw too, light, powerful. Probably the biggest difference between the two other than size, power would be the easy pull recoil on the 446s, (makes a big difference) and newer technology.
Or like Four Paws said, get the 490 when it comes out! (Oh, and ignore rahtreelimbs) :jester:

The German dyno tests, that you doesn't seem to like, confirms what you are saying.......:D :D

If you haven't run any to compare don't comment!!!

Man! We go through this every time! I think the question that was asked was concerning two different models of Shindaiwa chain saws, not how they compare to other brands. As for when someone can comment or not.........lets not go there!:bang: :bang: :bang:

346xp vs. PS 5100

Which is the more reliable saw? Any ergonomic preferences?

You are so right! Can't talk about anything on here without getting Husky or Stihl shoved in your face.

They're just trying to help

I run mostly Shindaiwas and have had good luck with them. I also have been able to pick up used ones at a fraction of what a new one would cost and I have been lucky so far in my aquisitions.
That being said, I don't know stickum about saws and I learn something new every day I look at this site.

Personally I welcome the comments of all members, especially those who have had the chance to run different brands of saws. With my limited experience I can only say that my 488's have been good for me so far.

The 488 is a proven product so I'd lean toward that if I went with Shindaiwa.

If you read a lot of the threads you will get a feel for who is giving the straight up info. From what I've read on here, for the money, Dolmar would sure be worth a look if there is dealer support nearby. From my own experience Shindaiwa makes a good product. I'm also located in an area that allows me to get parts in one or two days if needed.

Maybe there are good reasons for it??? :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :greenchainsaw:
Yea, I know they are good saws, just not the only ones made. I have run both, but I like my Shinny and Redmax just as well if not better, especially comparing the cost.

I'm with you OLD SKOOL. I looked at a MS260 before I bought my 488, but for $459 for a MS260 vs $299 for the 488, it was a no-brainer for me. Some say the 488 is a dated design, but I happen to like the old school controls, toggle ignition switch, separate choke, locking trigger, it is what I grew up with.

I was wrong in pushing the 346 and the 5100...........you guys run what you like.

The 488 is a good proven solid saw. I know many that have had good luck with them!!

Can't comment on the 446.
