Shindaiwa 488 Question

Does the Shindaiwa 488 cylinder have open or closed port design and has anyone had good experience getting more power from one?
 
It is open port. and yes. I have one I purchased on ebay, then had it built by Dennins Greffard, who is now departed from this site. It is a real strong runner, still going three years later. I'd say it lags my modded 346's by 10% or so.

I appreciate your reply. I'd seen your previous responces indicating you had positive experience with this saw and thought you would know. I've got a 346 that Dan fixed up for me and have been happy with it.

My brother has a 488 and was asking me if it was a good candidate for a race saw and I thought it would only be so if it has closed ports. For 3 cube Japanese saws I've heard some say the Redmax 5000 is good but don't know if it has the potential to win with the best in class alcohol saws or not. The one's I've seen have been based on a 026 or 490J/5000P.
 
That Redmax that Dan built was supposedly a real runner, if I recall. Since I don't race, I really don't know which would be faster..but Ed built me both a 346 and 5100S Dolmar.....I haven't really run them against each other in a critical test, but would say that they are darned close. (The times that Ed posted when he was testing them showed the Dolmar faster) In other words, the 346 is the better saw, considering it gives up about 5 cc's to the 5100. But, if you decide to build a Dolmar, I have a pipe for it that I might want to sell. Got it for fun anyhow....

That pipe sure sounds nice.. really crackles at some high RPMs..
 
Yesterday went to an afternoon "Tea" at the home of a couple who came here from Britain about 20 years ago. We took a walk around their grounds and it became apparent to the fellow I knew a bit about trees. He mentioned he had a chainsaw that had been serviced a few weeks ago, chain sharpened, and when he got around to using it last week it would not start. In fact he said you could not pull it over.
He brought it out and even before I tried the pull-cord I noticed industrious mud-daubers had filled the openings in the muffler. Took a twig and broke the mud dams, and it fired right up. First time I'd looked closely at a Shindaiwa 488. Nicely balanced and sounded good after it blew out that mud and the new wasplings ;^)
