Hi everyone, first post, from Ireland

I just bought a Shindaiwa 490, and am seeing bits and pieces
regarding carburetor issues, dealer warned me to ensure good
quality petrol goes in her, bought a Jonsered 2153 and a Husky 372XP
and same dealer made no such fuss.

So could anyone please tell me what I can do to keep sawdust out of the nylon
filter that looks to me like it will let in dust, and also if there is any better filters
I can add.
Any info on this saw would be much appreciated, they seem to be discontinued
and replaced with the 50cc 501 which I would have bought only for the good
price for the 490 NEW.
ALso there are no holes in the saw casing so am thinking this carb is not adjustable,
will look when I get home later today and put up a picture of the saw, it is the rather
square shape like the 488 which it replaces.

Thanks for any information

Regards, john

Has anyone any information on the Shindaiwa 490 regarding a better filter for
the Carburetor, mine is new and has only got the standard nylon type that I
would consider to be not fine enough to filter adequately.
I see some post regarding filters for the 488 which the 490 was supposed to replace,
so am wondering if the filters are the same, and in any event could someone comment
on where to get an upgrade filter or an over all upgrade that may even relocate
the filter to a less dusty location.
A link to a mod or an upgraded filter system would be great.
Also are the carbs the same on the 488 and 490, mine has no holes in the casing
to access or adjust the mixture, the manual only indicates one screw to adjust idle.
This is an image of my saw, can't upload a genuine one as CF card reader has bent pins.

I have a 490. It has access to the jet screws thru a rubber bung[the usual arrangement] but it's an EPA carb, appears to have no adjustment other than idle. It's bogging so I will be taking the carb off tonight. I will see if the 488 carb is the same and report back. This saw runs very well when everything is as it should be.
As to the filter, don't know of any options. Maybe keep the chain sharp[er] for less dust, more chips.

Thanks bigwhiteash
A sharp chain always pays off, It would be good to know if the 488 carb fits the 490.
Am more worried though that people are getting 40 to 60 minutes before having to
clean the filter but more alarmingly having to remove dust from the top of the carb.

I sent a mail to Shindaiwa regarding my concerns and am waiting a response which I will share.
Can see me taking this back, never had any such issues with my Jonsered 2153 or Husky 372XP,
don't think its fair to have to pay for a modification either just to overcome a poor filtration system.

Any info much appreciated

Thanks & Regards, john

Mine seemed to be clean in the carb bore, only dust was on the outside of the filter and in the housing.
Good news there, I hope I have a similar experience, I am a mechanic and I know just how much
damage dust in the cylinder can cause, and am surprised the filter is not more substantial.
Initially I never looked at the filter as I thought to myself surely no one is going to get this wrong.
