do u fellas that ship saws to canada incur a lot of exsta expence..or trouble..
thanks for any helphere. tony

I don't think they do as I have purchased a couple of saws from the States and they arrived without any issues. The one thing Canadian buyers should keep in mind is the Duty that will be charged on the value of the saw. I forget the %, but it can add up quickly.
The other thing, if the saw is shipped regular post, the Canadian Post Office charges a $5.00 handling fee. I have also heard that UPS (Brown Truck guys) inflate their duty charges and pass them off as "Brokerage" costs.

Does anyone know if there is Canadian duty
on used saw from US?

Toneman... I'd like to add that any Canadian
duty payable is on the total amount...
cost of saw+ shipping/handling X exchange rate
X duty.

Describe the saw as: "Used saw,Repair and Return"..
Why put boatloads of $$ in some greedy customs brokers pocket who is to lazy to look up the exemption #?

Gypo is right, as a minimum ship the saw "repair and return".

You cannot use UPS when shipping to Canada or you will get slammed with a huge "brokerage" fee unless the receiver is willing to complete the forms for you, which is an option. It cost me $52 CDN for brokerage on an ms260. USPS and Canada Post do not whack you with brokerage but their rates are higher initially.

Shipping as a gift will result in the receiver being hit with duty if the listed value is above $50 if I recall correctly. With the number of saws "lost" in transit if not properly insured, who would ship a saw without declaring a value and getting the proper insurance?

All of the shippers that I have tried charge alot more than domestic rates for shipment, because after all, shipping to Canada is "international" on top of any duty or brokerage fees built in. What a bunch of crap.

Ed has suggested that I use Purolator to ship my 460 since he has good luck with them. The only problem seems to be that they are a Canadian outfit(surprise to me) with no local outlets to ship from. I`ll be running that down today to find out how to do it.

Who pays this brokerage ? I have sent items UPS to Canada and it was just as cheap as sending it to the west coast. I have used USPS and kidded them why a letter cost $0.60 to go to Canada but only $0.37 to go through Canada and into Alaska. I have received saws from Canad and it appears some guys like to charge US dollars based on the lower valued Canadian dollar. There have been some that want $75 US to ship a 25LB saw. This is a problem no matter where they ship from. You can send a 2lb package basicly anywhere in the world for $5 through USPS but if a guy in Aistrailia ships you a 2lb package they want $20. Hard to figure out.

Hi Bill G,

It`s been my experience that if I were to ship a saw to California via UPS it would cost me $15-$16. To ship a lighter saw across Canada cost me $23 and when it got to it`s destination I was told that the receiver had refused to handle the brokerage and it was going to cost me $52 for this service via UPS. The receiver paid this fee and I reimbursed him since although I had gone to great pains researching the isssue to avoid paying unnecessary duty, it never occurred to me to ask about brokerage. I shipped the saw personally so I know what the costs were. The only figure that could be questioned possibly is the amount charged for brokerage but I believe it to be accurate based on subsequent calls to UPS Canada and vague references to the amount, by them. It is done on a percentage of the items value.

BTW, the UPS Canada people were the most rude people I have ever dealt with, at all levels and bar none. I refuse to use their services again given any other option. In the US, I like UPS but their rates have gotten a little pricey.
