One of my neighbors has had his property de-foliated over the last few months. It was a nice, .6 acre property with a bunch of mature oaks, maples, hickories, cherries, and some really junky pines. Granted the trees could have stood a good thinning to bring in some more light and make the property more open, but this guy has taken down almost 50 trees. He's a new owner up from the city. I spoke with him the other day about grinding the stumps, gave him a price today of $2,500. Apparently the darwin award winner* who he hired is supposed to come back and grind the stumps, plus take down the nicest, mature, red oak on the property which complements the house quite nicely. He feels that the guy is going to come back to grind the stumps, take down the last tree... which is really the only one that was over or near the house, and get rid of the pine logs which remain. Why he thinks this way is because he paid the guy up front, and probably in cash. He told me that he's already had trouble getting the guy to complete the work up to this point.
* A few weeks ago the "tree guy" who was doing the job was actually working at the property. It had started raining, and they had managed to clog up the Eager Beaver chipper. So being the safety conscious people that they are, they took off the chute, opened the access panel for changing the blades, and maybe unclogged it a little bit. They then proceeded to turn the machine on, engage the disk, and started jamming a stick down into the disk while it was running, all the while leaves and debris was flying out of the machine like a big green mushroom cloud. I was watching this going on and said to myself "tree man dies in chipper accident while arborist looks on from a distance" Well I actually said that, and "This is truly darwinism at work"
