Hello!

I have some Carlton A1 3/8 0.050 chains that I want to shorten to
try to run on a Hva 346xp. (I have sprocket and bar for that etc.)

I tried to order Carlton parts 40003 (side straps) and 40012 (pre-
set straps) from my local chainsaw dealer but they came up with
the corresponding items for N1C 3/8 LP chains - and at the terrible
price of USD60 or so - a joke really - good that it was wrong so that
I didn't have to take them ... .

I make Carlton 0.325 and Oregon 3/8 0.058 chains myself from
100 feet reels, so I am pretty handy with these issues I like to
think  . Anyway:

Query 1: Could I reuse the side straps and preset straps that I
punch out of my Carlton 3/8 0.050 chains to refit them to shorter
lengths? (As I have not been able to find the adequate straps for
that locally in Sweden - see above ... .)

Query 2: Could I perhaps use the side straps and preset straps that
came with my Oregon 3/8 0.058 100 feet chain reel to refit my
Carlton 3/8 0.050 chains? (For Carlton these straps do not differ
betwen 0.050 and 0.058 chains and both Carlton and Oregon seem
to be owned by same guys Blount Inc ... .)

Query 3: Is there some seller on Ebay or elsewhere in US that sell
Carton items 40003 and 40012 to Sweden? (I have searched a lot
but couldn't find any ... .)

Not the worlds most important queries perhaps, but would be very
grateful for help ... .

Best palbin

Edit: Got the Carlton numbers wrong - they are 43003 and 43012,
respectively.

When I spin chains I just re-use the straps.
I have not had any problems so far.
Just makesure that you do not use any that have any damage.

Reusing tie straps is no big deal however I don't think I've ever seen a preset that was reusable. As far as mixing and matching your brands I would just measure all the important parts of the oregon parts and see if they match up. I know that when oregon did away with the 33,34,35 series of chain there was alot of dealers who tried to use the presets and tie straps from 20,21,22 chain and they didn't fit at all. Because the pitch is calculated as an average of the distances between three rivets it lets each maunufacturer play with the numbers so they can try different tooth designs.

Yeah I reuse the straps, and I have yet to break a chain when running. I always make sure that the rivet is spun out well. Usually it is hard to get them together, so I go halfway on the one rivet and then spin in the other rivet. Then I go back and finish spinning the first one.
