So I was in the kitchen making breakfast this morning, and my lil lady yells for me to come look at this tv commercial. I thought it would be something goofy, but went and looked anyway. My jaw hit the floor. The screen said (name withheld) roofing and tree service. What the hell?!?! Are you serious? The commercial continued to run and showed the "pros" as it was put, cutting on some trees with both men in the bucket with no PPE whatsoever. One guy holding the limb being cut and the other running the saw. Then switched right to them roofing houses. I couldn't believe it! How do I compete with that? I just couldn't believe they had a commercial. Guess I need to up my game. Maybe roofing and fencing. Does anyone else have outfits like this running around in their area? Hope I'm not the only one.

I worked in Alabama over the Summer in the storm effected areas. My aunt and uncle live there and my uncle is part owner in a property group that owns apartments, condos and strip malls from Boston to California. I was not able to do any work on any of his commercial properties however because they are contracted with a national roofing/tree service company... Total hacks but what are you gonna do. There was a guy who made a pretty big name for himself in tree "service" in the town where I live. He even had his own nationally televised show... He made his money through his roofing company to buy large equipment and his way into the tree industry.

I guess if you’ve hit a few roofs you would have to be good at roofing. An add like that would make me think twice about giving them a call.. It may end up helping your business....

I was looking in one of our service directories today and saw one that had roofing, siding, trim, gutter clean out, several others that I am forgetting and... tree service.

Sounds like my job. The people I work for own over 250 houses and I am the plumber, roofer, tile, gutter, heat/air, and (drum roll) tree guy. Oh I forgot carpenter also.

Well I think there is a difference there. I have knowledge in other crafts. I consider myself a jack of all trades, master of none. I know just enough to be dangerous. But as a 'tree guy' I take myself as a professional and hope others do as well. I just don't want to add roofer and electrician to my business card because I blew the top out and it landed on the primary and then crushed the roof. Just because you have a bucket truck doesn't mean you should be doing any job that requires work at heights. Just my opinion.

Back when I worked as a mechanic for the airline in Detroit we had a guy working on his resume during lunch one day. He had put down " supervisor experience " and someone asked him when that happened. He said " Don't you remember the time Danny ( our Foreman ) called in sick and we all had to supervise ourselves."

I'm a bit of a Jack of all trades myself, but my tree business is just trees. I do all the other work through my other business.

The real problem is that the public thinks anybody able to swing a hammer knows enough to do treework.
I think we need to consider bringing back the name " tree surgeon".

many a roofer trees guys

Like you, we have no regulation. We have a tree service here, that advertises with massive phone book ads. He list topping as one of his major services. He started as a roofer, worked as a foreman for a company that my brother used on his houses. We believe he was a illegal that married one of the Boss's nieces or sumtin, getting the green card or whatever. He then qualified for a govt minority biz owner grant, was told it was 400g's, but dont know if it is true. We were building his bosses house. He and his boss seen that me and my cousin were at the job to meet my bro for lunch. They came out and started asking bout the tree biz (never dreaming that it would end up like this) we let him know whats up. Next month there is a new tree service fully funded by the Roofing biz owner. They do horrible work and they will top your tree with a smile, then comeback and re-roof your house after the jack it up. They have tons of equip and a nice new shop, all funded thru the roofing and the grant.
My bro knew this chick that was friends with the other roofing/tree service owners wife. We had a storm, she had some stuff go down, insurance job. They came in, cut the stuff off the house, with in the hour they were done. Collected a check for over 3g's and bailed, leaving the stuff on the ground, blocking her access to the doors and driveway. She didn't want to pay them, but felt threatened, they promised they would come back, never did. She had a Marine son just back from Iragastain, with some major PTSD going on. I felt bad so we went over and cleaned it up. I never do this, but because of the jarhead, I felt obligated. I think you are right, roofers often cut branches away, some how this leads them to the tree service. In this area, this is really bad, the tree hackers here are bad enough, but the roofing industry here is much MUCH worse! Hackers who cant hack.............roof!
