Finally got my pressure & vac tests done on my 046, since it was raining Saturday I pulled the cylinder off.
Here is what I found

This is the worst spot

The intake side didn't look too bad.

The saw had about 130-135 psi compression before I pulled it apart & didn't find any air leaks, gonna replace the fuel line and filter, do a carb kit, hopefully this won't happen again. This is my first time doing this much work on a saw and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I don't have it completely back together yet.

Cleaned it too

I also cleaned as much of the oil/saw dust mix off of it as I could.

Not very helpful to others, but I figured, what the heck I'll show what I can do. :)

I would recomend replacing it. Could you put it back together and have it run? Yes. How long will it run? Anybodies guess.

As a 'general rule' that much compression is still pretty good; but, below that it is considered to be questionable. If the cylinder looks good and you have the parts, I'd try cleaning up the piston and replacing the rings; then take another compression check, after you run it awhile to let the rings 'set.' Personally, I've not had too much good luck replacing rings or even a piston and rings. I keep trying; but, I usually end up putting on a complete new top end kit.

130-135 is really poor for an 046. It will be low on power.

Dump the piston. Even with new rings it will slap like crazy, never idle well, and isn't worth the troubles it may give down the road.

Hone the cylidner, new OEM piston/rings, and the saw is good for another decade or two.

I couldn't find the joke smiley, but I was being sarcastic. I had gotten the saw off of E-bay and got the seller to send me a new piston & cyl. since it was scored when I got it- the usual description of "runs great" Got the new piston in using some zip ties to compress the rings and am waiting on the rest of the parts I ordered to finish it up.
