what do guys think about these, im thinking about building something similar. but maybe not a boom type, it almost looks like just loog splittler running on reset vavle would be just as handy. i have the skidsteer with bibcat hiflow

all i need ram with a oval valve or some kind reset vavle and ill fab the rest. maybe mounted on skidsteer forks.

this is what im thinkn, maybe hand operatev valve would be cool.

Splitter

I have one that I bought from Northern Tool that is for a 3 point set up on a tractor. I fab'd some brackets, bought the 3pt. links, and voila, a nice splitter for about $600 that I can raise and lower with the Bobcat. I have had some large logs that I just put the splitter on the ground, roll it on and split away. I use it on a T190 and it works fine.

My beef is the fact that you have to run a $10-30K piece of equipment (tractor / skidsteer), for what a $200 Briggs will do. Plus, if you want to take it to the woods or another location, you gotta trailer 5000# just to split a few rick of wood. You could pick up a nice used trailerable splitter for $800. JMHO.

The one in the video is almost as retarded as this one:

I applaud the ingenuity and constructive abilities, but dang that's gonna make a mudhole in the yard squirmin around to get the next piece.

Here are my favorite homebuilts.

Alright JackAss, if you are going to rip me and call what I have "retarded" I will rip you a new accordingly. I already had the $45K dollar skidsteer, and didn't need another 5HP motor to maintain! And the ability to be able to split large logs by lowering it to the ground made sense to me. I don't give a #### if it makes sense to you. I was just giving my opinion, just like the original poster was looking for. You threw the first punch, I will throw the last. I don't intend to reply if you so wish to in the future.

I'm in the process of building one for my S185. It's just basically a normal looking log splitter turned upside down.

Stupid idea? I don't think so. Not only can I easily split 20" diameter birch that nobody could think of loading onto a normal log splitter, I can also gently pick them up with it and carry them around. Some of us, Horseshoe, have a bit more than a few "ricks" to split. I need 30 cords a year.

Boom Splitter

I understand the concept w/ the vid Evan posted. But from what I saw that dude alomost wrecked his picinic table and came pretty close to to squashing his dog. It just seemed like to much wasted energy and gas to split those logs. I can see using it to bust up some 3 ft wide logs because they're just to big too handle. I'd rather use the skidder w/ a grapple att. to move logs. Just my opinion I'm not trying to step on anyones feet. Anybody who has Skidsteer is one up on me anyway that's one toy I'd like to have.

I'm still perfecting mine. It sticks straight out from the machine. I can grab the log and split it right over the pile. Makes stacking realy easy ;) In reality I haven't spent much time perfecting it because my OWB will burn full rounds without splitting if I can lift them into it. Once I figured that out I just targeted little trees and left the big ones for other folks. We burned 30 cords this year heating a 10,000 sf building. I have to figure out the fastest way to get wood..LOL..

I actually hate Bobcats. The only thing mine is really good at is moving snow and topsoil. Other than that it's a P.I.A.

I was not referring to your splitter as the one I thought was retarded. Your's is a totally different concept than the one in the video Evan linked:

http://www.skidsteerlogsplitter.com/

I used one like your's on the back of a 3000 Ford tractor for years.

The guy in the video is driving around with the splitter in the air, going to each piece of wood. That is a huge waste of time and it tears up the site. Your splitter on the other hand can be taken to the wood pile and split from one spot, cylinder facing up. If you already have the power unit you'd be crazy not to use it.

We're both 18 posts into this thing. Not the way I want to start things off. I'm sorry if you misunderstood my post and I hope you realize I wasn't including you or your equipment in any of my references. PM me if you would like.

I've used one simular to that for about four years, mine is straight away from you instead of sideways theres advantages and disadvantages to both, the plus is they are truely a one man operation, we do about 50 cords a year through ours and can handle any size wood, biggerest so far about 6ft diameter and nobody had to lift a thing except the split chuncks. Advantages of the sideways mount like the one in the video is you have better visability of the splitter and chunk of wood, I don't know how far away from the skid steer its actually mounted so size maybe a problem if you were to do 5 or 6 ft wood it would be too close to the machine, but the biggest drawback is whats the nicest about having it mounted straight away from you, this is something we came upon by accident. You can pick up a log up to twenty feet long depending on diameter and hold it in the air so you can get off and cut it up off the ground without bending over and you can also use it to shove the split blocks out of the way to clean up the area without changing attachments. We usually have one run the skidsteer and one or two running saws and if your working with up to two foot diameter wood just pick up the log and the chainsaw crew goes to work and once cut up just split it and go get another to eliminate having to bend over to work up blocks on the ground, slick as all get out. We just run it off of the skidsteer valve like a grapple or anything else you'd run and thats all thats to it. I'd make the wedge and push block taller on the next one I made just so you could pick up a 3ft log and hold it off the ground, right now my wedge is about 10 inches tall and we can pick up about a 24inch log without it slipping out of the splitter, other than that I love it and wish I'd done it 20 years ago. As for tearing up the ground we usually work in the winter when the ground is frozen so it doesn't hurt a thing. We run two chainsaws most of the time and split as we go and man can you go through the wood, we usually run through about two gallons of gas in the saws in a morning before chains are dull and everyones tired of it and you have a lot of wood cut and split. Working alone if stuffs blocked up you could sit in there all day and split wood without getting out or handling blocks period. When you practice you can tip the blocks over and line them up to be split from the seat without ever getting out. Now my kids want a firewood processor to speed things up even more, but for now and the amount we do its truely the most valuable part of the firewood equation in their eyes and mine anyhow. I've run conventional splitters where you had to lift the chunk up onto them and pick up the pieces and resplit them and you couldn't give me one of them again ever after running one of these, theres no comparison for production or ease of handling let alone operator comfort, my skidsteers have heated cabs nobody complains about the cold or sore backs, now the biggest problem is if the radio works and who gets to run it. :)

Horse, Thank you for the clarification. I mis read your post. I am on a bunch of automobile sites and there are so many "punks" that hide behind their computer screens in the parents basements that I get a little upset when personal comments are directed at people. Easy to do on the internet. You sound like an upstanding guy and we will call a truce! It is just freakin' firewood anyway!! have a great day

Hey, I spent 5hrs Saturday on a 300 Utility International dragging trees up out of the creek. Also spent two hours on the end of a Poulan Super XXV Counter Vibe (two Stihl's and and Husky sitting at home). During that time I solved most of the world's problems and forgot the rest. So, I say no hard feelins' here......Saw on!!!
