I have an 044 with a 36" bar. I run a full comp chain, with reasonable speed, and was wondering what difference a skip chain would do. I have 3 chains for that bar, and was wondering if skip chain is the way to go, could I just grind (keeping it cool) off the offending teeth. I am just wondering about the use of a skip chain. I know that it is for long bars, but that is about it.

Thanks
Carl

well full skip has its place ,,and cuts alrite .. it definitly got a place on mills etc..
but ive tried what u thinking about
and my results while fair.. didnt improve on the full complement. and was a rough cut. i didnt think i gained anything.
of course my bar nor saw was that[as yours] big ,,so u mite try one an see.

I use full skip LumberJack...I'll never go back to comp, but all I do is pretend to butcher a few cord of firewood though...

Full skip is much worse about kickback than full comp. You have to watch that bar tip. I run full skip with a 32 inch bar, and full comp on shorter bars.

The big advantage of skip is reduced filing time. If the bar and chain combo are near max for the powerhead (drag of sharp cutters in a buried cut is pulling the rpms down out of the best section of the powerband) then fewer cutters can help reduce drag and provide better chip clearance. I like skip chain but full comp IS smoother.

I have a bunch of skip chains, all the way down to 20". kickback is not a problem, (I hold on good and proper and always position myself correctly) and I think they can cut faster due to less clogging, provided they are real sharp.

But they do kick harder.

grinding teeth off seems like not such a good idea, that much heat can't be good for the temper, or god forbid you wear even a little on a rivet. a chain coming apart scares me more than anything.

I use full skip on 394 with 37" bar 404 i think i really need on that size bar, when your in to that bottom 10' of butt log and your cutting in to cookies you need that,
But when i am felling the same log i will use my 395 with 24" 3/8 fullcomp.
I am thinking o putt full or simi skip chain on that 395 this summer
and see how that works out , filling those extra teeth does make a diffrence when you are you are hitting stones, nails , cement etc.... on that but log.

skip

I have noticed more crank and bearing weat on the 460 with skip chain in haredwood. Of course, it is not recommended for hardwood, but the customer is always right.

So you're saying skips are hard on the motor? interesting.
I cut a lot of hickory and locust as well as oaks, That has got to be a rough ride for the lower end. Can you elaborate about skip not being recommended for hardwood?
Thanks

The first thing you need todo is get a larger saw a 36" is way too large for a 044 you better get a 066 or a 088.

I don't think anybody in this area runs full house chains on saws with a bar larger than a 24" myself all I run is skip tooth on my 046 and 051. My MS260 runs a full house chain but the bar is only 20"s long and runs a .325 chain.

I was basing that on the fact that on this side of the river pine trees are thicker than hair on a dogs back. People here are scared of pines near there house because of all the storms that we have had. They don't care about the oak, because they "live forever".

On the other hand trims are amost always hardwoods.

I didn't mean that I would only do pines, I was saying that a majority of my work is pines in referance to the 36" bar on the 044.
