Saw the Sky Crane arrive this afternoon. They will be flying big logs tomorrow, the smaller heli (10k lbs) has been here for a couple weeks, the sky crane comes in for the big logs, they have flown logs the make the 950H snort. Up to some where around 30k lbs.

That's a little heavy for a Skycrane. I think they usually figure 20,000 is a good turn at sea level and they'll lose about a 1000 lbs. of lift for every 1000 feet increase in elevation. If the weather is hot and the density alitude goes up they'll lose more than that.

Better tell somebody to check their scales. :msp_biggrin:

40' 30"+ SR been done and we are just at sea level. 3 of these are a load so 22k each maybe. Makes a new 950h work. Never had one yet we couldn't lift but some heavy ones. All i know is that is it is more than most of the little yarders left in the woods will around here pick up by double. They buck anything over 24" any more. Not like 10 years ago and before.

IN 1986 I went to work for Husby at Eden Lake in the Charlottes and he had a Sikorsky S-64E flying wood then. Belonged to Erickson out of Medford I seem to recall and Grizzly Bear was the agent or something like that here in BC. Husby later took that over himself.
That thing could really move the wood out of the bush when set up in a good situation. I recall it had a safety release at 24,000 lbs load weight and tried to keep the loads at 22,000 lbs or less. Landed every 42 minutes to refuel. Was 112' across and each rotor was 50' long. I recall being told the driveshaft was 12" in diameter too.
Helluva machine to watch working.

Take care.

Yep...SDGE is selling their F model right now if you're interested...

Oh yeah, that's what I need. :D I'm trying to get out of this business, not bury myself back into it. I even sold my Cat. I'm down to three saws, pair of Wesco calks, a lunch pail and a pickup...just right.

The only thing I want to do with 64's any more is to wave as they fly over. I keep thinking about 500 gallons per hour of Jet-A at today's prices and it makes my head hurt. :)
