What's the most efficient and safest way for attacking 1" to 3" starters/saplings? Seems notching and back cutting is overkill on most, but slashing/straight-cut is subject to some undesirable forces with the taller ones?

Pulling most of the smaller ones with a clamp action bar, cutting with a grub ax or pulaski, cutting them with a saw blade backpack weed cutter, with a chainsaw use the shortest bar available. When using the chainsaw, push with the left shoulder and upper arm in the direction you want it to go while cutting straight thru at a comfortable height at a downward angle then come back and cut low later with another thru cut.

I BOUGHT ME TWO BATTERY OPERATED ALLIGATORS GREATEST BRUSH CUTTERS IN THE WORLD

What you going for? I do a lot of weed and brush abatement for fire clearance out here. I use weed/brush cutters, chainsaws and even hedgetrimmers followed by a maddox or pulasky. Also having cut many miles of fire line in my life I like to think I have it down to a science. If your cutting a lot of saplings or brush and don't cut out the stump, you,ll have more of a mess in two years. I can pop a small stump with one or two swings from a maddox. If your working heavy brush its good to have a puller working with you, so you can concentrate on the cutting while the brush is pulled away as you cut. Get down on one knee when cutting low, It'll save your back and cut as low to the ground as you can. On level or semi level ground, you can rent a self propelled brush hog, it's well worth the money and will eat up 2in saplings like their candy. They'll turn a two day job into a 6 hour job. I can clear some brush with a weed whip, and brush hook faster then most power tools if its not to thick. All depends on what your going for.
I like to use a saw with a 28in or so bar get down on one knee and make a big sweep mowing down stuff. keep the chain tighter then you normally would or you'll throw chains. Stay away from those brush bars.
