Here's a picture from Colorado. I didn't know snakes would go up in trees!

Here in Ohio it's pretty common to find black snakes in trees. May be others too but black snakes can get really long. It's why my wife refuses to walk in the woods.

Black snakes are easily found in trees. Couple years back I cut on in half in the tree. (hollow)

Yeah, I once almost walked into a 6' blacksnake. I had just parked the family van next to the tree where we always park. Got out, and found myself face to face with blacky, about a foot away. Gave me a start! :D

If you use a saw as a weapon make sure you use the top side of the bar.
I used the bottm and ended up with it in my lap...

Blacksnakes seem to have a fondness for altitude. I've found them in barn rafters and peeking out of knotholes in trees pretty high up.

I think Bob's picture is of a Grey Rat Snake. They climb, and climb well. Very common here. http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/elaobs.htm

I have several wood duck nesting boxes on my ponds and Rat Snakes are a big predator problem. I also had one fall off the rafters of my shed one night and it landed right across my shoulders. Had one fall about 30 feet out of an oak that landed at my feet. It had a young squirrel.

The dad burned things get pretty big, too. 5 or 6 feet is pretty common.

This one was about 5 feet up a creosote corner fencepost on my place. I'm only 5'9", so he was staring me dead in the eye.

I've seen black snakes, copperheads and one green snake in trees, all were trees I was climbing, not fun finding a copperhead snake in a tree, it's either him or you, one of you will hit the ground hard if things go wrong..

We were canoeing in the Batsto river in Central Jersey when a snake dropped from a tree into the canoe in front of us. I must say watching my friends wife sizzle a pop with fear was quite an interesting scene from my boat. It took them a while to get it out. The poor thing must have been really scared and happy to be free once they did. She was never the same. Actually she handled it quite well for a city girl.

Found a small rattlesnake (16 '') about 3 ft. up in a clump of privet hedge while cutting underbrush one time. Have seen several green snakes high up in a tree. They're easy to catch, don't seem scared of you at all. My trimmer cut a large king snake into several pieces (accidentally) while removing a big oak limb with a hole in it about 30 ft. up. Must have been coiled up in the cavity. Hated that, I like king snakes.
