I think my neighbors have gotten used to that big "Thump", and their floors shaking. They don't even come out anymore, Joe.

I know! that split second earthquake seems to make it all worth it.

altho standing and dead, that tree only had one inch of dead meat on it,,it was still solid as a rock in the center. the trunk was at least 24" or more.

I got one just like it on the edge of our yard.
Was one of the BEST White Oaks on the place.
It was struck by lighting (I think) three years ago.
Been standing dead for the last two years. Limbs are starting to fall.
It is only 20' from our fire wood stack.
This spring it will be dropped and processed into firewood.

I drive by this farmers pasture on the way to and from work everyday and there are 8 trees just like that just waiting to be pounced on. Wish I could go get them! Seems like a crime to just let them stand there.

That's how I used to feel driving through Western Maryland when the Gypsy Moths went through, dead Oaks everywhere, Joe.

I believe that these are dying because of the cows being pastured there. Looks like the area is over pastured, grass get too short, ground gets too hot, cows compact soil around trees, lots of things to weaken the trees.

I read on the NYS DEC web site that there is some kind of fungus killing oak trees.

google "oak wilt" ...not sure if that's what caused tree in original post to die, but all kinds of vines and ivies wrapped around a tree aren't good for it either.

some of those vines were like 2 inches in diameter along with numerous small ones entangling the tree. took me about ten minutes just to get them out of my way.

but, oak wilt...I believe that's what they called it. and they said if an oak tree was determined to have it, then surrounding oaks must be taken down as well to stop the spread. so, like a good environmentalist, i'll have to walk back in the woods and see if there are any more oak trees near by that have to come down. ;)

just stop and ask! often they are left up because there's no reason to take them down if nothing is around them. i'll bet the owner will say go ahead and maybe share some of the wood with him.

some species have a "mother" tree that nourishes smaller trees around it...root systems and releasing of carbon might potentially harm other trees ...then again, nature has a way of taking care of itself.

I found 11 trees standing and a couple that someone started cutting and then quit(probably too big), in this pasture I go by every day. I tried several times over the weekend to find people around the farm but no luck yet.20170226_165344.jpg 20170226_165409.jpg 20170226_165437.jpg 20170226_165456.jpg 20170226_165739.jpg 20170226_165747.jpg 20170226_165911.jpg 20170226_170016.jpg

that's a lot of fire wood there! and the best part it's all in one place. keep looking for the owner(s)

Less than 3 miles from my house to top it off! Keeping my fingers crossed.
