Anyone have an idea of what these saws are worth? I bought the 2 of them used several weeks ago. The 654 has an 18" B/C and runs and cuts great. The 631 has a 12" B/C but has a few problems. It has what I think is a carb problem that allows it to idle fine but won't rev. While idling it constantly oils leaving a gooped up oily mess on the bottom of the saw. I can work on cars but don't know much about the internal workings of a chainsaw. I don't know if these would be easy problems for me to fix or if I should just take the saw to the shop and have them sort it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tip rupedoggy but I checked the muffler and there is no screen. just a metal box with a couple of louvers that divert the exhaust down. I may need to explain the problem better. Sometimes it will rev to half throttle and run there fine, but most of the time it'll start to die off and if you stay on the throttle it will die but if
you let off the throttle it will return to idle and keep running. It always does this at full throttle if you can actually get it to full throttle. If you very gradually raise the revs I can usually get it to full throttle but a few seconds later it wants to die. From working on cars it sounds like it's running out of gas at upper rpms therefore needing more fuel flow to the carb possibly caused by a partially blocked fuel filter or weak fuel pump, but I don't know how this translates over to the chainsaw world. Thanks again for any help.

More information is a good thing. You have done a good self diagnosis. The filter is on the end of the line in the tank. Fish it out with a wire and clean or replace. There is also a small screen in the carburetor where the line comes in. Must dis-assemble for that. The fuel line should be checked for a small hole or tear. It will pump air better than fuel. The pump is in the carburetor also but is activated by a pulse from the crank case. If it is a line you can check that. If a hole in the carburetor block, it may be plugged. Even though it sounds like a fuel delivery problem, change the spark plug and clean the air filter. Mike

Your getting some great info, If this doesn't work you could check the meter lever height.

Thanks for all the good trouble shooting info. I took the carb off yesterday, cleaned it all out and put it back together with no change in the problem. I work the 3 to 11 shift so i ran out of time and won't have time today to mess with it, but might get around to checking the filter and fuel line tomorrow and I have already messed with turning the H screw with no changes. Hopefully one of those 2 things is the culprit. i'm not in that big of a hurry to get it fixed since it's not my primary saw but it would be nice to have in case something happened to one of the other 2. Thanks again for all the help.

well i finished up the few other things i needed to get done faster than i planned so i tinkered on the saw a little more. should have just left it well enough alone because now it's worse off than it was. gonna have to see if i can find a part now. there's no possible way to pull the fuel filter up out of the tank with a wire. the tank is 2 pieces so i took the front half off so i could see what i was dealing with. I was expecting the same type of filter as a string trimmer but this one was a long square fiber type of filter that has some sort of spiral wire clamp holding it to the fuel line which is all one piece with a grommet that fits into a hole in the tank. ended up tearing the fuel hose between the filter and that grommet. i think if i cut the hose off on either side of the grommet i can enlarge the hole in the grommet and get a piece of fuel line to squeeze through it and make it work with a round floating type of filter like a string trimmer has. actually i have an old trimmer that i may be able to rape the parts from. when/if i get it back together have to see if it made any difference in the problem and if not i guess it's on to the carb. at least i'm learning the ins and outs of how all this stuff goes together. well thanks again for the help and i'll keep ya updated on the mess i've managed to make.

Got it back together today with the new fuel line I made and a weed eater filter in the tank. Seems to run great. Haven't gotten a chance to cut with it yet but at least it'll stay at full throttle now. It had to be something with the filter or line because that's all I did to it. Now I just have to figure out why it constantly oils. Just at an idle it drips chain oil from the bottom under the clutch cover. At least it runs at full throttle now. Thanks for the help rupe and lucky.
