Finally got to really run my 288xp some today...Very very impressive saw...Pulls the 24" lgx chain i have on it very very well...For an older saw it has loads of throttle response...Not really used to that...Most of the older saws i used where all torque and not much on top but this one pulls everywhere...Now i just have to decide if i will keep it or not...

one of the few saws that would lug down and still pull, but has top end like a 50cc saw,one of the best saws husky ever made, keep it!!

Lots of people say somethig like that, the rep of that one is far greater than the specs indicate :rockn: :rockn: ......

I would guess with a larger carb, different muffler and possibly different ignition...O ya and an oiler that poops oil out all the time lol.

I've got a 288 I've had since around 92....It looks like pure hell, but it's got a new bottom and top end...It is the saw that really got me goin' in this business...I'm still pissed at Husky for discontinuing that saw.

How does the 288 compare to a 385 or 390?

Now that I have freshened up the 288...It's damm close, the 288 might even have a slight edge.....I have yet to get my hands on a 390,and probably won't...I can't see spending that much more than what a 385 costs and getting nearly the same saw which may be only slightly better, when I can put out just a little more $$ and have another 395..The 288 is not and will never be no slouch....I do know that where the 385 will bog down, the 288 will keep luggin' to where you can almost count the firing strokes..and it seems to rev higher than it was advertised to...12,500 on the 288...13,000 on the 385

I am not sure what year the epa started choking down chainsaws, but my old 50cc olympyk 950 super will hang with my new 5100 all day long, olympyk has better torque curve as well.
olympyk is heavier and vibrates more.

that 288xp seems almost pissed off at the wood doesn't it,that saw will never be forgotten in my mind.

Good ol' saw, even after 10 years of use. The one in the pics is the heavy duty 288. Not to be confused with the 288 Lite version. I bought this one in '96. The JB Weld temp repair kept it going while I broke in the 385, which does not quite measure up when I need that extra push on a fat stump cut. Listen to the saw in action on the trunk cuts at.
