I have a Speeco 25 ton splitter with 9hp b&s engine. It sits alot, so the engine tends to be finicky at times and mice like to take up residence in the recoil housing. I'm toying with putting a 5hp electric motor on it. I have 220 in the garage and a 100ft 10 gauge 220 extension cord. I did the same conversion on a previously 10hp gas chipper last year and it is a beast. The 5hp motor will start the huge flywheel in the chipper from a dead stop in a heartbeat. Granted it draws 25A to do it. Anyway, here's the motor I would likely use. Has anyone tried a similar conversion?

I have a homebuilt splitter that I changed to electric and I love it.
The splitter was built using and 11 gpm pump(two stage) and a 4 x 24 cylinder with a 2 inch rod.

I changed it over to a 3 hp 220 volt electric motor (single phase) and the splitter works great.I do all my splitting in a 30 x30 shed about 150 feet from my house so I always have a good dry work place .
The two stage works good and the splitter has a very respectable cycle time.I have only stalled it once and that was on a very ugly crotch.
I just split for my personal needs of about 4-5 cords a year .I love the Ease of use,, just flip a switch and off you go.
