I just won 150' Velocity in a raffle yestorday. The splice is too small and I can't get a carabiner through it.

Got any tips?
Am I s.o.l?
Did the donater look in the bag and give it up for raffle?
Should I work at it.
A little KY maybe?

It was nice thinking I had a spliced rope again.

I bet if you work at it a little, start with a small 'biner and work your way up (in a few minutes I mean, not like a week long process) you'll get it to fit. This goes beyond what I'd call convenient, however.

If you'd like, you can ship it to me for a new splice.

What 'biner do you use?

Try a smaller biner or phillips screwdriver and wiggle it around to open up the hole a little bit. I only use the tight eye splices on my lifelines. Sometimes they are too tight but I've always been able to make them work. The ones that start out too tight end up being perfect because the biner will never be loose in the eye as the rope gets older. The tight eye is much more convenient than the large loop girth hitched on the biner (which always flops around loose).

I never liked girth hitching the splice for the same reason Skwerl.

And Nick, I was originally going to direct this thread toward you, I'll think I'll work at it (eye splice) for a while. Seems to be the obvious solution.

I am using a petzol william, not exactly small.

Thanks for the response guys, I would've posted a pic but a small eye splice is kinda self explanitory.

You'll get it. If this was something that was spliced at the factory, maybe this should be brought to the attention of the maker. They might like to know.

So, how'd ya fix it? Just kept reaming it out with a smaller item? I bet the biner won't slip in the eye now!
