Split Tails

Ordered a split tail with an eye in it but they`re the same diameter as the climbing rope, 1/2".
I thought they were suppose to be smaller so they would bite the climbing rope better?

That is the cord used for closed loop hitches, MT,VT....

Splitail is standard climbing line, like you just cut the tail off of your traditional system. Your still using the same hitch to climb on; taughtline, blakes...

John, does the Blake then bite tighter than a closed loop such as the Prusik?

It does, that's why i prefer the Schwabisch or distal, and the Vt (French prussic) above all.

One nice feature with an open split tail, is that the bridge length can be adjusted, long for climbing up, short for down.

Any knot is safer tehn the prussick.

I dont like mt/vt, you have to watch them too much.

Use a blakes with a slack tender and you are good to go.

I`m just learning to climb on a rope and I`ll have the equipment for both the open and closed systems.
I want to experience both methods of climbing.
I plan to start with the secured footlock and closed climbing static system.
When I become proficient with that I`ll switch to the open dynamic system.

French prussic (Vt, Mt) is not for beginners, but, is, by far, my knot of choice. As it with the four or so people I have introduced it to. Several others have stuck with their other systems, simply because they aren't as willing to take the time to try something new.
And, now, I've learned how to self advance it, and, using the adjustable sliding bridge,(Mark Adams) body thrust with it if so desired.
