Thinking of putting a larger pump and motor on a splitter for my uncle to reduce cycle time, but he doesn't want it to be too loud. Is a 9hp honda horizontal louder than the 5.5 horizontal?

most honda's are quite but a 9hp may be a louder, not by much

look for muffler db's thats the only way i know of

They are about the same db wise. Pretty expensive upgrade though for a couple seconds maybe of cycle time? Ask yourself this question. How often do I use the whole cycle? Splitting hardwood as I do, unless I've cut a crotch right at the end of a round, I usually use 6" of cycle back and /or forth before the wood splits. So unless you're doing all elm or another stringy type wood, the gain you may or may not get (due too pump versus cyl) is very negledgeable.

I had a 5.5 hp Honda with an 11gpm pump. Upgraded to the 8hp electric start honda and the 16gpm Barnes pump. The 8hp does not seem all that much louder. Definately was a speed improvement and there must have been some overall power improvement. Almost everything pops without even straining . With the 5.5 it seemed like it had to work a little harder.

Hope you don't mind me asking a question about a Honda GCV 160, 5.5 hp motor.

Have one on my splitter. There is a very tiny leak near the valve cover on the bottom of the motor. There is a small 1/2 pin sticking out of the motor and it is dripping just a tad of oil.

Is this something I should be concerned with? The valve cover was also leaking and took care of that with some red RTV gasket goo.

Thanks.

Too soon old, too late smart. I now wear hearing protection whenever running equipment of any kind no matter how loud or quiet it is. Wish I had started that 50 years ago. I have a pair of muffs that reside in the PU for the saws/splitter and one that stays with the rider mower. One or the other is always handy to borrow for use on other stuff.

I assume your talking about the GX series. Yes the 9hp is louder than the 5.5hp. And from my experience the 5.5 isnt very quiet at all. I use a generator that has the 9hp and "she really bellors", at wide open.
