For those of you who srt a static line for access or ddrt over srt as i do much of the time. What tool are you using to anchor off at the base? I know the gri gri, is a proven winner. I've been using a figure eight, which seems to work well, but i know there are better alternatives. I just quit using my Grillon which is basically a gri gri, w/ a slightly different handle. Do you think i could use this rather than buying a gri gri? Is anyone here using the Id' for his type of application. It seems nice just awfully expensive for no more often it would get used.

I'm not really sure if i know what you're using the device for so my answer may be a little off...

I don't know that the I'D would work as well as the grigri in that slack can't be pulled through as simply.

Why the need for a fancy device at the base of the tree? Is this only for moving the DdRT setup up or down in the tree? Or just for the possiblilty of lowering an injured climber?

A figure eight can take a solid hit and only costs 10$.

purpose would mainly just for in case of need to lower a climber. Just thought for competition purposes judges would rather see a fail safe device, or maybe just fancier, than just a fig 8,

Well if you want strictly work with no BS then an 8.

If you want to show off your anchor then a petzel id will work for this (I have used it), and it is plent fancy and high priced.

I would trust an 8 over an Id any day, but i am confident of both, and but my life on them regularly.

For comp how about an 8 hard locked, with a prussick backup on a seperate system?

I stay with my bowline, if i need to be lowered the groundy is experianced in the art of life line cutting :D.

The grigri is more of a belay device while the grillon is a lanyard tender and the iD is a descender.

The gri-gri is the best piece of gear I've used for an adjustable anchor point. I've got a whoopie and a delta link dedicated for my SRT static line.

The i'D may be a bit smoother for lowering the climber, but is it really worth the extra money to have more then one of them. Use an i'D for working and a Gri-Gri for belay.

Using the Grillon would be a good choice. the I'd is way more tool than you need.

Either the GG or G is a better choice than the eight because they are much easier to teach someone how to use. Since these tools are more intuitive, "let go lock off" they are better suited in this application. These tools can be unlocked without having them slip. I fear that in an emergency someone will unlock a figure eight, the load will jump onto the rope and they will drop the patient.

Besides, eights don't generate as much friction as other tools.

The I'd can take up or let slack out just fine. This is what these tools were designed for.

TJunkie--I almost always use a 6-bar rappel rack with a hyper bar at the base anchor. It locks off rock solid and releases under load with complete control. Costs more than an eight, but still nothing like a I'd...around 75 bucks. I am using this setup on big conifers, mostly, with drops of over well over 100', so the superior heat dissipation of the rack over any of the other units mentioned is a factor for me. It is the smoothest running rappel device out there, IMO.

Great answers guys. Tom that's what i really wanted to know, was if my Grillon was sufficient. If so, awesome, this will keep me from having to buy another tool. I'm trying to save up for another saddle.
