for a change its not raining , so I decided to move some poplar into the cellar in preparation for shoulder season .as I was stacking it occurred to me that without thinking about it I don't just randomly stack , I put each piece where it fits best for tight stable stacks .this will be my 23 winter in this house and I figure ive stacked about 600 face cord in the cellar over the years .I guess that with that much practice I should b good at stackin .

6-7 cord a year since 1967. 3 in back porch, 3 in small woodshed. I got tired 'chimney stacking' the ends in the porch and built 4 bookends out of 1x4 lumber to hold the ends. Works great. I still have one that spent 2 years outdoors holding the end of one rick. My ricks ae usually 6' tall.

My wife says I go over board on my stacks. I usually stack as I'm splitting. I take all of the pieces that are about 4-5 inches square and build the cribs on the two ends, and fill in the middle with round and triangle pieces. When you get used to it it's second nature and actually goes faster, because you never have a pile falling over, Joe.

Were going to tinker with building some holz haulsens..... Might as well make the stacking interesting. Be cool to see how many it takes to get through a winter and to build them big enough to last a season.

I made this little rack for keeping wood in my basement. wood rack.jpg
Its about 6ft long and 4ft high. I just roll it to the basement door and load it up and roll back close to the stove. I used to just pull my gator loaded with wood inside and leave it until I used up a load. Kind of got tired of sweeping up the gator tracks. One load on my rack will last my wife about a week at "Hot as Hadies" temps
