Hi Kevin:

I've got a double wall stainless chimney. I just run a brush up and down my chimney twice. Shine a flashlight down it and see if I need to brush again. Usually it is pretty good after two times.

Mine usually gets a downstroke and an upstroke and its good. Sometimes I'll repeat if the weather is good.

I had the chimney sweep out a while back because my stove just didn't seem like it was burning very well. He looked at a lot of things and he did approve of my chimney cleaning.

It must be all of that pine that I burn...I must have swept a whole cupful of dry stuff out after almost a whole season, half of my fuel being pine.

.

I barely need to brush mine, a couple of bangs on the side and 2/3 of the stuff falls off. 4-6 brushes and clean up with a shop vac at the bottom and i'm done. nothing sticks very well to SS.

Brush up, brush down. Use a flashligt to gauge necessity. Couple of whacks with the firepoker on the inside section of the stovepipe tells me if I'm in need. Firstly, the more metallic the sound, the cleaner; the more thudlike, the more buildup. We have a great draft and have little build up.

I understand how to clean a normal chimney as this is not the first chimney ever. Just wanted to know if i need to apply something to the inside after cleaning with brush for the summer?
Also had a question about the stove its a vermont castings from the 1970s and you can load it from top or open the front doors. there is a valve that closes off the chimney and wanted to know when to close this as it seems when i leave it open the chimney rarely gets dirty and when i close it the chimney get really dirty quick.

thanks for all the replies
Kevin
