Standard 028 vs Super?

I asked this in another thread, but didn't get any responses, so I'll try again:
So what is the difference between a standard 028 and the Super model? Or between any of the standard and Super models in the old Stihl line-up? Is the Magnum name just a different name for Super used on the larger saws?
 
I can't tell you for sure on the 028, but typically the Magnum means the saw has a dual port muffler, a HD filter (sometimes?) and is a higher HP saw. For instance, there is a thread I started a while ago about bigger saws and we discussed the lineage of the 056 which cam in standard, Super, Mag and Mag II. From what I understand, on new saws the Mag sticker may not mean that it is a higher performance saw than it's standard counterpart.
 
I don't remember exact specs ,but I am pretty sure the super model has a slightly bigger bore with a little more power in all or most models. The mag is another step up , in those models,but the mag 2 I think is usually the same displacement as the original magnum.
 
The 028 Super was also a different combustion chamber shape and used a flat top piston with a dome cast into it with an angled plug......The later WBs I have seen kept the larger displacement but dropped the domed piston top

Actually KD, I'm glad you posted that. I have an 028 Super that belongs to a buddy in my shop that needs a P/C kit, and that's a much better deal than I can get locally thru my OPE parts house at my dealer cost. His saw is what prompted me to ask about the Super in the first place. Actually thinking about looking for one of these to fix up for myself.

Pics would be great as I bought one of those cylinder/piston kits as well. I was checking prices and when I found that, I had to pull the trigger. Looks like gasket is not included, but thats OK.

Looking forward to tearing into it. Are the stihl cylinders marked to indicate what size they are???

then the AVEQ and WB became 47 cc. 44mm bore made in Germany & USA

The AVEQ Super was about 51.5 cc. 46mm bore made in USA
the USA made ones that I have found have plastic fuel tank/rear handle and starter cover.
the super has a larger oil pump plunger with steel gear, this is better for longer bar.
later models have a different muffler support, like 026.
the super I have also has a different carb number and the intake boot is different inside.
the super has a higher RPM setting and all 4 that I have found had bad crank bearings.
the super top end on an old german case makes a good saw with no plastic.
 
Not to steal anyones thread, but, what will this cylinder make the total cc's for an earlier version 028?? Nice price BTW (sorry if I should not have posted link)

Maybe I'm missing some point here, but the 028 Super piston will not fit the early 028s at all, they are too large for the cylinder bore.
 
Yes, I'm talking, cylinder, piston, pin, clips, to convert a standard to the super using the kit in the link I posted earlier.
 
I have a decent running 028 AV and wanted to put a super cylinder on it. Who has run both versions and could you comment on the power difference? Thanks.
 
IMO, if it's running good, leave it alone. I noticed a big difference, but, the piston/cylinder that was in there was worse than I thought as far as condition. It was actually installed backwards by th prevous owner (piston was put in backwards).

With the super cylinder, it runs really strong now, but it's not even broken in yet. I have read here that it is doubtfull you will notice much, and I believe it.

Now when it comes time to rebuild due to normal wear and lost compression, then by all means go with the super. KD
