I've used and always gotten the standard 4-d ring saddles with the smaller buckle leg straps to keep the butt-strap on the cheeks... with the standard back.

I once had momentarily a wideback saddle, but am wondering what happened to it. That was at least 15 years ago now. Anyway, what sort of difference does having the wideback saddle make for climbing?

I'm assuming it must be more comfortable or something, but would like to get some feedback on climbers who have used these.

Do the wideback saddles make that much of a difference and if so, why?

Thanks,

The wideback saddles spread the preasures of climbing over a bigger area so they are more comfortable. Especially if you are using a buckstrap(flipline) or hanging heavy stuff like a saw or rigging gear from your saddle. The wider surface gives you more back support and digs in less. I have recently switched from the old buttstrap/regular back saddle (15 years) to a legstrap wideback saddle and will never go back. Legstrapps give you unlimited leg movement and the wideback feels great when using the flipline and carrying a saw. Hope this will help.

saddle

I have travers saddle 2 d RINGS IN FRONT THAT slide from side to side where you clip in.Has wide back and saddle seat with straps that go between your legs to keep seat where it should be for support.I like the seat saddle.Cost is about 225 about 2 years ago.

When you say "wide back" I asume you are talking about the Buckinham or the Weaver saddles.

As Nails said the additional surface area spreads the pressure over a greater area and really makes a difference in comfort.

Up until lately , these were some of the top of the line saddles. I used one for years.
They are simple to put on, very durable and work well as long as you don't try to SRT in them.

With the new advances in saddles, there are better choices out there now.
The main thing they have going for them is price, they are alot cheaper than all of the new stuff out there.
And unlike some of the new stuff, they will last forever.

Sherrills has the Weaver wide back for 150.00
Make sure you don't pay more some where else.

If I were you, I'd look at the Butterfly 2, The Treemotion or the new Petzl Sequoia

It's only money...
And you only buy it once...

It's surprising how a few replies from trusted sources can make a guy gain confidence in a product. I only thought of the climber's weight and never considered sometimes larger saws are brought up. I always used the standard saddles with no back problems or tiredness at all. However, I did notice some back pain or tiredness from a few climbers. Maybe getting a new wideback would be the solution?

Thanks. Looks like this will be something else I'll be getting soon!
