My 361 seems to have a shorter starter rope than the 310 that I traded in on the 361. This bugs me because in order to give it enough oomph to start, I sometimes hit the end of the rope which seems like it would not be too good for the starter or crankshaft, which get yanked on HARD when the rope runs out.

Is this anything to worry about? Can I put on a starter rope that's 6" or 8" longer?

Thanks again for all the help. I'll drive you boys nuts yet.

Nope - you MUST use the correct rope length.. or you'll break the starter spring. The correct length is in the IPL.

long-arming a 361???? Take it back and get the dealer to look at it... is this the same saw that blocked the screen?

BTW, the saw takes 3-5 pulls from cold to suck gas though to the carb. Long-arming it won't make it start any quicker. It will be easier to start without the decomp sometimes... particularly when cold.

Thanks, Lakeside. I guess my question is, am I likely to harm the 361 if I occasionally "hit the end of the rope" when starting it? Is it likely to bend the shaft or damage seals or anything like that? It never used to happen on my MS310...

Nope not hurting the engine

just tightening the knot on the rope. and overwinding the starter recoil spring.
yes you can break things in the starter assembly.
try short quick yanks. not long 10 horse briggs pulls... You are basically trying to kick start a chainsaw.. think of starting a chain saw in Motorcyle terms..quick snatches on the rope

You can hit the end of the rope on any saw.

Hitting the end of the rope is not an issue. Over-winding the spring is. So long as you spring has at least 1/2 turn left, you're fine. Put an Elastostart handle on it and you'll never hurt anything, or yourself
