i put a new solenoid on the starter in the massey ferguson, but after releasing the button i have to disconnect the battery to stop the starter from turning over. if the motor happens to start, evidently the starter dis-engauges. the starter has even been rebuilt and we still have this problem. is it possible i'm overlooking the obvious? anyone have any ideas or a direction for me to head in? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

It is possible that the new selonoid is sticking, After that I would look at the pins and linkages that engage and disengage the starter drive. I have seen them worn and cause this problem. I have also seen burrs on the shaft stop the starter drive from disengageing.
Try taking the starter off and spinning it with a set of jumper cables and see if anything is obviosly wrong with it before you tear into it.
Also check with who ever rebuilt the starter before you tear into it.

make sure that you hooked the wires onto the solonoid correctly. if it is like a common solonoid, with 2 main cables and then 2 smaller ones. if the 2 smaller ones are not on the right post the starter wont dis-enguage. (dont ask how i know. :D )

teeth

check that the starter is shimmed so that the drive doesn't stick to the flywheel teeth, if the drive was at falt before many times it will burr the teeth of the fly wheel and not let it disengage. you need atleast 10 thousandsgap between the teeth.
check all other sugestions also.

Is that a Delco Remy or a similar setup where the solenoid plunger engages the drive as well as making the electrical contact or is the so called solenoid really a relay and the drive is engaged by a helix in the drive itsef. The Delco Remy setup had a return spring under the contact disc that if broken or not installed would not stop cranking. There is also a large return spring on the solenoid plunger that could cause the problem if broken or left out.

any progress on your issues?

yes, got it work'n. the ring/clip that stops the starter gear from slapping the nose cone was gone. so i think what the problem was is that the gear was being shoved too far into the flywheel gear, and was getting stuck in the flywheel which was not allowing starter gear to return. at any rate i took that stopper off another starter and put it on this one and i havn't had it stick since. thank you all for your ideas, your time and efforts are apppreciated, as they always are:clap: !!

thanks, Jon
