Starting out, wondering where this "business" stuff comes from?

So, I have am starting out on my own at 36 and going to school. I have been working in the forests since I was 19 and I have been climbing for a while now. What are some of the most successful ways of advertising that you all have tried? How much do you spend and can you handle most of it yourself or do you hire an outside agency? I am probably going to start out flyering just to see if I can drum up some quick business, but I want to get online. Has anyone had any success with websites or online advertising?
 
Mailing flyers- avg is about a1% return ( or 1 call for 100) getting fairly pricy at almost $0.50 per. but you can due it your self in small quantities to very specific areas, I do not know what the current market price is on a service But I was never happy as too much was wasted due to a zip code blanket effect( and they pad the H out of it). Next choice is flyer insert in some of the small papers again about 1% return per printing. Local Craigs list or similar, church, grocery store, ect bulletin boards, free. Web page ,if you are savy enough you can create your own, catch is getting it on the net ( monthly charge, or per click charge) to get listed on the search engs. Lot of flim-flam floating around in this. Best to get your own domain ( can be as low as $10/yr for Domain name registration) And Last but not least Door to door canvasing + word of mouth. If you do the door to door thing clean up and do not look like ya just crawled out of a hole in the ground. A jacket or shirt with Bus.name/logo adds an air of credibility. Something on the truck or car helps a bit ( mobile advertising) Just watch out for the ins co, They just love to double the rate because it is used for business ( Which in my book is a crock) All ways helps to kick back a couple bucks for referrals or at least a letter acknowledging same. I have also used radio, difficult to judge that for me as I don't listen to it. Business cards- hand them out like confetti at a parade join local rotary club = personal net working.
 
I found the success rate for flyers is much lower than 1%, probably closer to 0.1% and the cost per flyer can be had for around 3c in full color (10,000 for $300). You need a scooter or similar if you plan on getting more than 1,000 delivered in a day.
 
I agree with the word of mouth idea and an existing customer is the best way to help promote your business. Word of mouth also extends to the internet and gives little guys big voices for cheap. Online reviews are going to be everything in the next few years. The phone calls will go to those who take care of their customers well enough that they will put up a positive online review. The only way to get the good reviews is do a good job. It's competition at its finest. Tree services with deep pockets can no longer rely on big yellow page ads or the digital world will run them over.
 
My fear is the crooked competition leaving bad reviews. It's happening to one of the larger competitors here. At least that's what he's saying, and one of the worst company has pages of great online reviews yet everyone that is local knows you can't trust a word he says and doesn't finish alot of jobs if he gets paid. But I do agree online reviews are becoming king.
 
I agree that is a problem, but a savvy consumer can often see what's going on. Most online review sites also let the business owner respond to negative feedback. It is usually easy to tell who is on the up and up. If there are lots of negative reviews that all seem like they were written by the same guy then something is up. Also, the sites that host the reviews have an interest in the quality of the reviews. If you suspect foul play it would be worth talking to the site manager to see if there is any recourse. It might be as simple as requesting invoices that prove there was actually a transaction.
 
Volunteer your services for storm cleanup/road opening with local fire departments. Signs on all vehicles. Pass out pencils with your name and number printed on them. And business cards.

Charity doesn't ask for a return. That kind of advertising only attracts the lowest form of customer anyhow.
 
I'm no "marketing expert" but I have taken a keen interest in the topic, my business is young but it took me a little while to realise that the majority of my business growth depends on the success of its marketing plus providing a quality service . The best advice I can give about a website is that you must be very, very selective on who you decide to build and optimise the site. Also learn try to learn some seo basics yourself. One thing that i have learnt about marketing is that the industry is full of sharks, pretty easy to get ripped off by advertisers. I do some flyers too when it gets real quiet, I target neighbourhoods where I can see work and $. Apparently if customers can see your business name in different mediums like newspaper, website and flyers in combination they are more likely to call.
 
In most places the problem with starting a new business is just becoming known. Service to the community is always a positive way of getting recognized.
