Beef tenderloin steak grilled in the fireplace tonight, yummy! Baked potatoes, sour cream and sweet corn from last summer's garden, too! Can't buy a meal like that at a fine restaurant!

Funny note from hubby: "We haven't had steak since last summer." Yup, he's right.

Does anyone else cook over their wood fire?

Absolutely!

More often than that we use the wood cook stove but if the fireplace is burning the kids always want "Tin Foil Dinner".

Beef & Taters, Venison & Shrooms, and Fish are the favorites.

Yeah. But for me (like b1rdman), it's cheating. My stove was designed to cook on and in.

Most recently was pepper steak sandwiches. Night before was roasted whole chicken. I've been known to enjoy a falafel.

This morning, once the cooktop was hot (takes 20-30 mins from the strike of the match) it was pierogies for breakfast. The son had a juffybake pancake. My wife had cheerios. Doesn't like my cookin.

Falafel !?......yuk!

Pierogies!?... You a Polack!?

Not that I know of.

I razzed booga about being a Polack but I'm darn near one myself. 3/4 Lithuanian...we could be Eastern Bloc "brothas" if my hunch is right. We got the big boned women and they got the sappy jokes.

My 95 year old gram (from the Old Country) visits us once or twice a year and she whips up (it's a weekend affair) a few batches of our favorites. I'm a Kraut guy....the kids and wife like potato...and some prune ones (believe it or not) for the old folks.

Nothing like a steady diet of sausage, potatoes, and peirogies.

Falafel(?) Pierogies(?) I've never had either one of those items.

Ah, well, probably my upbringing: Never had a malt or onion rings either until after I was married. (Hubby insists to this day that I had a sheltered childhood......... :) )

Funniest thing in 'adapting' to married life: When my Mom served prepared cucumbers at home, they were served in apple vinegar with sliced onions, a touch of pepper and a little oil. First time I had prepared cucumbers at my in-laws, I about died when I took that first mouthful. In-laws served sweet/sour cucumbers prepared with vinegar & sugar. It took me years to get used to eating the sweet/sour version.

A gal I knew who went to UNH insisted I try one. She was a veggie gal and always eating weird things. The taste was unusual but I got to liking them. She's long gone. But I still like a falafel. It's an acquired taste. Like Moxie or the music of Tom Waits. And how some AS members feel about my posts.

To you and ductape. Wallyworld sells them frozen. They're sometimes hard to find. Usually near the ravioli. Not like what Babci made for my Dziadzjui - or what you'd get in the Polish neighborhoods of Hamtramck or Parma. Good enough for me, though.

Falafel is a deep fried patty made from flour milled out of dried chick peas (garbanzo beans). I was in my 20s before I'd even heard of one. A Syrian guy accosted me with a plate full of these weird patties giving out free samples. Which I passed on until the aforementioned fateful day. Seemed weird. Too much pierogies - basically Polish raviolis. Stuffed with potatoe and various cheeses.

What is this malt you speak of? (Excuse me as I go and put some ice cream and milk into the blender. I have a real hankering for a frappe. :)

every chance I get

harman has a grill to go right inside the top and I just had a grilled cheese made on the top ,In a pan of course.

You are an acquired taste...Sometimes I read your post and see Fritz Weatherbee. That's a compliment.

Regarding Walllyworld...I don't shop there but I can guarantee you that their pierogies are NOT the real deal.

Tonight I did venison burgers (that I killed) over Hickory (that I cut) and buns and condiments were bought with money I made doing tree work. I love the feeling of being fully self sufficient/self contained. Don't have to count on the Govt. or anyone else.

Looking good 046. Got to love the smoked bologna! Not many outside of okie land will even know what it is. The real meat don't look bad either! ;)

Hope you guys had a great supper hubbynwife!

It's a good feeling isn't it? If it wasn't for bread I could do a entire meal from "my land"....too bad I LOVE bread.

Yes, I should have clarified that: Malt as in an ice cream malt.

Edit: I should also clarify - Never acquired a taste for the 'other' malt (beer), but a Southern Comfort Old Fashion w/water or Bailey's Irish Cream or Creme de Menthe on the rocks will set me on my way...... :)

Similar story. Part Irish and part Metis. I'm listed in the phone book as Mcwoodboogawiecz (Wetherbee is my screen name, B1rdman ;) ).

The substitute teachers in school could never pronounce my name right and I used to get laughed at all the time. Perfect training for posting on AS. :)
