What chains are you all running... My stock Green chain cuts fast but i am sure the yellow if faster. what model yellow on what saw... I know u are all gonna yell and scream but I have two ms390's love em both but whan my green chain is dead then i will probally want to upgrade the chain. ...just for the heck of it I will mention I plan to run the Sthil Bio for the bar and Ipone for the mix. I have always had good luck on the snowX track with Ipone and I have also had great luck with it in the ATV's

Are we speaking 3/8" or .325?

I ask, because .325 is standard on them here, oddly enough.......:hmm3grin2orange:

If it is 3/8", your best bet is RSC for clean wood, and RM for dirty wood.

In .325, I believe it is RS and RMC, respectively.

+1.

It should be 3/8" on the 390, since absent a customer's request for something else they seem to set the 310 and 390 up with 3/8" here in the midwestern and eastern parts of the US.

I was cutting with a fellow

yesterday he was using a 290 farm boss.. running some sort of .325 semi chisel chain.. Man was that little ole saw throwing the chips.. large chips.. I was impressed. Not sure whose chain it was though.. I will delve deeper into it the next time he comes over to cut.

I have a 290 and I ran an .325 RS on a 16" bar and it worked great. You have to watch what is around the tip a bit more...like limbs and stuff because it sure wants to kick a lot more. I switched to a 3/8" 20-inch bar with a skip chisel chain (Oregon) and liked it a lot too.

I run RS or RSC most of the time. I do have a loop of RMC for dirty wood in case I have to skid a log out with the tractor before I buck it.

Having run RSK since the early 80's , Run some RSC now, and a lot of Carlton chisel (Woodsman pro from Baileys? I am not sure)

If you feel confident that you have an understanding of the differences switching from a "safety" chain, buy every means it is going to cut faster!

But the final product of how any chain will cut for you is how your sharpening it. There has been a fair amount of threads addressing the issue, but still just scratching the surface or how tweakable they are.

As important as how sharp your chain is, paying attention to the angle , and the very working corner or the point on the hook, are the depth gauges. Setting the amount that the cutter can reach into the wood . Establishing the chain speed per saw and per the wood your cutting has a lot to do with everything!

GREAT ADVICE ShoerFast-now if I cld only figure out how to figure it out
