Hello,

I am a newbie compared to a lot of the people on this site, so excuse my stupidity if it shows to bad.

I have a stihl 009 saw that when cutting just basicly stops at wide open speed. It seems like some kind of brake is applied, it is fairly sudden but not instantly. Is this the clutch going out? I am clueless with chainsaws.

Thanks to everyone in advance for the help,

Hi Bladeheart, Welcome to AS

Does the engine sound like its under load? or is the saw just not doing anything.

in the case of the saw sounding like its under load but not cutting try this.
you see the lever in front of the front handle? pull it back till it clicks, then you've probably fixed it. its the chainbrake, designed to keep the operator from chopping off limbs if kickback should occur.

if that doesnt fix it, I dont know.

Kickback is the upward motion of the guide bar when a moving sawchain on the upper 1/2 of the bar nose makes contact with something, such as a piece of wood. this causes the bar to come upwards and toward the operator. chainbrakes are built to keep that kickback from cutting your arm off by stopping the chain.

I pretty sure it isnt the kickback bar, however I can be wrong. Is there something on the bar that can become loose and make the saw hang? Just curious. Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi, Ryan.

Welcome to AS. Gotta say I like your handle. Just please don't refer to a bar & chain as a blade; around here it causes temporary insanity in some folks.

Every time I post something where I think I might know what I'm talking about, other AS members come along & post much better advice & information. So here goes my $.02.

If the chain stops moving, but the saw continues to run, I have to agree with OSA re the chain brake. Recently I've been working on a 011 & a 009. I suggest taking the bar cover off (the chain brake mechanism is attached to the cover), remove the small cover from the chain brake mechanism, & thoroughly clean the entire area. Also thoroughly clean out the clutch. You might also have a weak spring that causes the brake to engage even though there's little pressure on the brake.

Hopefully some of the more experienced users & mechtechs will provide some more useful responses.

I am sorry for my poor useage of terminology. I am actually a lawn guy just getting my feet wet into this field. So far, it is quite a different animal. I love it so far, except with all the new and exciting daily problems I have now.
Thanks again. I will check out the recomendations.
