I have in my collection a Stihl 011, this saw runs and cuts very well but the last time i used it, it spit fuel mix out of the vent tube which ended up running to my already hot muffler and of course caught fire ( briefly ) i put the fire out with some dirt and the saw doesn;t seem to have sustained any damage except alittle soot. Is it possible that the fuel cover vent is plugged?? The saw wasn't over filled or anything but was topped up prior to this incident i started the saw again after cooling it and it's still spitting some mix. Any ideas? The fuel lines are pliable ( not brittle. ) and none seemed plugged.

The vent tube is supposed to have a grub screw in it to stop all but a tiny dribble (if anything) of gas coming out. Does your vent terminate in the sponge beneath he clutch drum?

Are you sure the hot muffler was to blame?

When an 011 catches fire... don't ask how I know.... It's usually because the ignition wire is arcing to the cylinder fins. Run it at night without the side cover on it and look for sparks!

011 problem

No. The vent tube runs under the top cover and ends there, its only about 3 inchs long, i will try as you say and see if shes arching or not but i would suspect a lack of power or cutting out if it were arching which it doesn't do. After the small flame i turned it off and have not tried to run it again til i figure what happened, i got this saw about a month ago from a neighbour who moved so i don't know the history etc... The vent hose is attached to a grub under the cover i will check this tomorrow, i know that generally not much fuel should escape from that grub but this seemed to be alittle more than should have been coming out of such a small hole.

011s (and 009s) are easy to spill a little fuel while filling. Runs into the air slits at the filter, and at the recoil cover.
Arcing ign lead is about all on a saw that will ignite mixed gas, imo.
Just sayin don't blame the vent too quickly.

011 problem

Well i openly admit to not having to much knowledge when it comes to a stihl other than they are generally a great product, i have more experience in the Homelite, McCulloch and Pioneer saws, i appreciate the replies and will certainly look for the arch tomorrow before i do anything else maybe the flywheel chafed a wire or its a bare spot on a wire just from vibration during normal use either way, i will pull the starter cover tomorrow and check all wires for wear etc... Thanks.

This saw is not old enough to have a reed is it?

The old reed valve saws that I work on get a chunk of wood that sticks the reed open and will spit fuel out of the carb.

011 problem.

I don't think it has a reed valve however i am not sure how old it is i guess around 3-6 yrs i'm sure its a minor problem but would certainly like to rectify it, its a great saw and for $40 cdn i could not go wrong. I have also to go and get another Stihl that the owner says don't work but is all there and all i have to do is look at a lawn tractor for him, i am unsure of which Stihl model it is but hey, its a Stihl so i will take it, he also offered to pay me for looking at his ride-on-mower ( can;t beat a deal like that! ) as well as the free Stihl he's offered a good lawn mower ( walk behind. ). I have attached a pic of what my saw looks like, ( identical. ) Thanks.

Age has nothing to do with it. that black spacer you see under the carb is the reed. they all have them, isn't the 009L still in production?
edit: Reason I keep refering to the 009L is that they were basically the same saw. 011av has a slightly bigger bore, different rear handle and av mounts, but they all use the same parts. you can put a 011 jug and piston onto a 009 with no problems.

011 problem.

I will check it out and pull the carb after i check for arching what happens to the reed valve that causes gas to spit out? My ex: neighbors were good folk i lucked out, i had done some favors for him on his lawnmower and poulan weedeater so i guess he thought he'd give something in return for a good price, he's an older man ( 65 + ) and moved from the house nextdoor that has a wood stove to an apartment/condo ( no need for the saw. ) I used to plow their driveway with my snowblower as well, they were good quiet people and tolerated me reving engines a good part of the time, hated to see them go.

The vent hose attachment you see is a barb, not the "grub screw". The tube is supposed to be routed past the carb and down to just above and behind the clutch drum. A grub screw is inserted into the vent tube to let air pass, but little if any gas.

Arcing doesn't always mean lack of power. It's quite common on the 011 style engine.

And yes, as Ralph states, it's a reed valve engine.

011 Problem

Well Lakeside if thats the way its supposed to be routed than this one has been shortened and is missing the grub because its just an open-ended short tube at this point, as i look at it, i will replace this hose and add the grub tomorrow and see if i can get a copy IPL from my dealer, he's pretty good, than i will have an idea how its supposed to look. Thanks for the help, i will let you know what the other Stihl saw model is on about Saturday when i go to the other guy to check out the lawn tractor, i have been a mainly pioneer man for a long time but i think that is changing, too hard to find parts.
