I'd like to have a chain brake on it if I'm gonna keep it. Would an MS200T cover/brake fit ?
Also, the recoil makes a bit of a squealing noise on the return (with saw not running). What might cause that ?

The chain brake cover will not inter change. If I can remember tomorrow, I will see if I have one laying around.

Most of the time i just spray WD 40 in the recoil and the squealing will stop.

If you dont hear from me tomorrow, email and remind me to look for the cover.

Thanks !
F.y.i., I heard some 'bots are programmed to fish email addresses from forums so it's not a good idea to post it in public. You might want to edit that out before you start getting bombarded with Viagra emails. lol

Brian, I have some left over parts(no chain brake) from my 020AV & 020AVP parts saws build. If you need anything else, pm me.

This is probaly what your after. The saw on the left is an 020 AVP super with the newer style chainbrake for that era. There are two different style chainbrakes for the 020. The one with round rod didn't work too good and many people just removed them.

The saw on the right is a MS 200 set up with a rear handle. As you can see the side covers won't interchange between the 020 and 200.

If you can find a 020 Super with an intact cover it will interchange if memory serves me right. The front hand guard also has to be able to accept the chainbrake. Most of the older AVP's just had a simple hand guard with no slot in the handle for the chainbrake lever. You will need that and a spring also to make the switch. It can be done.

If you can a decent 020 super top handle parts saw you can make the switch as all the parts will be on that saw. Good Luck.

Good info Ax-man. Thanks !
So...it was only the supers that had the brake ?

There is an older chainbrake design that came out prior to the 020 Supers and was made for the older AVP's. The cover is a little different and the engaging lever is a round rod instead of the square one. Both will work but the older design had flaws in it and wasn't too popular from what I have read. The Supers with the improved chainbrake desgn worked much better.

If you ever see a older 020 with a open slot in the cover that is where the chainbrake parts are suppose to go. Many of those covers were sold without the chainbrake parts installed in them.

I have swapped out the chainbrake parts from one cover into another but you need a press to get the pins out of the cover. Not exactly fun to do and is always easier to find a cover with all the parts in it. I had to that to that 020 Super in the picture. Brand new side cover with parts from another beat to crap 020 Super clutch cover.

Hey Ax, what was the difference between the AV & AVP? They looked identical to me inside and out.

RD

They are the same saws. AV stands for anti-vibiration. The P is for professional which was for the rear handled 020's. The type of handle is the only difference.

From what I know about this AVP business is you bought a top handle AV. then you ordered the rear handle and converted the top handle over to a rear handle. I am assuming a sticker or decal with the letter P came with the handle and could be put on the gas tank making it a professional model. I have a couple of these stickered saws in my collection. I am assuming Sthil started offering a choice of handles to the dealers, this is probaly when the gas tank tags with the 020 AVP started showing up. But those gas tank tags can be changed easily also.

To me this is all backwards as a top handle saw is for a pro climber doing tree work. A rear handled saw does make limbing and bucking up small wood easier so I guess this is what Sthil considers to pro type work.

Thanks for the info Ax, I thought they were the same, but I hate assuming anything.
