I have a Stihl 020 that I bought 35 years ago, don't laugh, but I have finally worn out the chain. I purchased a replacement chain for this saw at Home
Depot but it doesn't move freely. Has the width or sprocket teeth gap changed over the years?

Chain and bars for the most common saws come in gauge of .050, .058, .063

1- It is important you know which size/gauge bar you have and match the chain and bar together.

2- It is equally important you have the same pitch sprocket to go with your chain pitch. Most common/popular chain pitches are .325 and 3/8 or .375.

If unsure, a chainsaw dealer will determine all those for you.

You are probably running a chain gauge larger than your bar, the sprocket pitch could be wrong also.

I bought an 020 in 1970 and it came with a 1/4" chain which I switched over to 3/8 low profile chain, but you have to change the clutch sprocket and bar if it has a roller nose.To get a 1/4" chain you will probably have to go to a dealer.I think I still have the chain that came on mine and it's probably half worn out but if you want it I'll send it to you. It's for a 12" bar.

Yes, this great saw used 1/4" chain back in the day. The high rpm's on this saw and the tiny kerf of that chain makes it a pleasurable saw to run through a branch, very rewarding. I would stick with the 1/4" chain if I were you. I happen to know a guy who has alot of it, alot! Ray at 502-584 6346.

Chain I bought was Y55

The chain I bought was a Y55 Power Care which stated it was for Stihl 020,
I was told Power Care is a private label for Oregon Chain.

Thanx

I have never heard of them before, not in this area anyways, which does not mean your info is not accurate. The Power Care label or brand just may not be marketed everywhere.

If you purchased this 020 used, the original chain bar & sprocket may have been swapped out for something else other.

If purchased new your owners manual will tell you the exact part #'s for bar & chain and for the sprocket probably.

If in doubt take it to a Stihl dealer, he will be able to supply the correct chain for your bar and sprocket. If the sprocket does not match the chain, you will damage both sprocket and chain as well as the bar.

Tony, I never realized Stihl had 1/4 in. chain.

Gestaut, here is a link that can help with your chain identification, in your case your chain originally factory supplied being 1/4 pitch your chain model would begin with one (1), i.e: 13RM2

Here's where it pays to go to a dealer and not to the store for your parts. Take your old chain and saw with you so he can measure it. I think LOBO has it, it could be any combination of wrong gauge, wrong pitch. While your at the dealer have him check the sprocket for wear and do replace the fuel line.

Thanx to all for the support

I thank everybody for the support, I had called Stihl technical support, was
not informed of the 1/4 inch chain. Thanx again all!!!!

Stihl has an "ansi kit" for that saw that includes everything to convert is to 3/8 low profile or 'pico' chain. When you called Stihl they probably assumed it had been retro-fitted. 1/4 chain is getting hard to find so buy 2 loops and you'll be set for the next 70 years!
