I was cutting for about 30 minutes when the saw made a sound like hitting
pie plates, it cut fine while making this noise then stopped. I could not
restart it. Any ideas of how to troubleshoot this?

Does it pull over?
Does it have spark?
Does it have compression?
Can you take the muffler off and see the piston?
Is the piston scored?
What does the spark plug look like?
Did the flywheel key shear?
Will it run on a small shot of carb cleaner?
These are the types of questions you should ask yourself anytime you have a saw that won't run. Your engine needs air, fuel and oil in the right ratio, properly metered and compressed to be ignited at the right time and have a free path out the exhaust to run. If any one piece of the puzzle is missing it won't run.
