Had chain come off bar twice as adjustment screw slipped thru the rubber grommet that supposed to keep it in place. Was thinking of using gorilla glue to keep it from moving, but wonder if anyone has solved this issue with the front tensioner.

looks like part # 33. Fits into the space at the front of the case where the Adjuster screw goes. There is a small pocket you put the rubber type grommet in and push the screw through it. If the fit is tight the screw stays in place. If not the screw, can move forward loosening the chain.

Once the chain is tight and the cover nuts snugged down, you can throw away the adjuster. It is NOT to keep a chain tight only to adjust it. In fact most experienced sawyers loosen the adjuster after the nuts are tight. Keeps the adjuster from wear. Yours is probably bend worn or junk. Mike

I am aware this is an old thread.. I have an 024 early type and the tensioner screw is bent beyond use, I am struggling to get a replacement 34.. Is the later type of side adjuster retrofittable or do I need the later type side panel aswell as the adjuster set ?

Does your current side panel have a hole drilled into it as well as the other two for the bar studs? If it is already there, then you can probably use that side panel and install a side panel gear driven tensioner.

No, just the two holes for the bar studs.. I have converted my 170 from forward adjuster to side adjuster, I wa wondering if the early 024 was convertible ? I do also need a chain adjuster either way..

AV meaning anti Vibration ?
Yes. Some Stihl 024 AV's do not have a chain brake, but that does not mean that they can be converted to a side-tension adjuster. Here's one that I upgraded to an 026 top end, and it had a chain brake.:

But, I doubt it could have been modified for a side chain tensioner.
