working on a 026 that has the fixed high speed jet, that's having problems getting up to speed. I cleaned the carb,tweak the metering level a little but dies in the wood. I said the best fix is to get the wt-194-1 carb that's adjustable. The saw is the cleanest 026 I have seen in awhile. I said for long run that's the best choice. Question is my thinking right?
 
Yes it sounds like running out of gas when I ran it. It doesn't cut off and idles nice with oil every where, but loses the top end. And good throttle response like the muffler is plug up?
 
Do I have to change the top/snorkel .


Mine do not have the snorkel but one that I have in for repair does. Both saws run really well. I recall someone posting that the air filter for the older non snorkel carb was hard to fine. So it would be up to you. I do believe you can plug the snorkel hole on the air filtif you decide to go sans snorkel.
 
The old air filter is still readily available in the US. The WT194 is a very good choice. The "snorkle top" requires the newer style filter. The WT 194 can be used with the compensator top from your other carb. Just swap the flat top with the snorkle is that is your situation -- you should be fine. (On another note the WT22 is not a bad carb either, just saying).

How far east in NC are you?

Sounds like you're sucking air from a seal or you have tear in the intake boot. Start the saw let it idle then take the bar and push down on the tip on a log. If it idles up or dies you've got an air leak.
 
I replaced the fuel and the impulse hose while I had the carb off for a kit. I did inspect the boot and it seem fine. I have had saws with a air leak but this 026 doesn't act the those. It will hold a steady idle all day.

The boots tear in the crease the only way to find it is by bending the boot. Like I said easy thing to do is start the saw put the bar tip on the log and push down. Then find something solid pull up. If it idles up the boot is the issue.

Will do that check in a few. By pushing the bar up and down moves the boot right?
 
I did the check that Cuttinties posted but it didn't change how the saw ran. Ended up getting a wt-194-1 off of ebay for 57 bucks. It came in a walbro box but says Stihl on the cover. Is that normal? I'm changing it as it now. And its a flat top cover.
 
Not sure you should throw away that old carb. This sounds like the old carb's filter screen is clogged up. A simple removal and cleaning of that screen may have solved your problem.

I just fixed my 028 that way. I pulled the carb and the rubber and gaskets looked fine, the only thing dirty the screen. I replaced the screen and saved the rest of the kit for the future.
