It will run all the way up until it runs out.....:)

Seriously though, no way to answer that question. I had an 028 super and it was really good on fuel, It would run for probably 20 min on 1 tank.

I will check back I have asked The Stihl Corp but no answer yet from them but it is a holiday weekend.

You probably wont get an answer from stihl. That is something that is just gonna be hard to determine. Heck, I have never seen a saw that had the run time per tank listed. It all varies too much. That said, they quit making the 028 in the 80's. I would think the army could spring for some newer equipment. LOL

You could always gas her up, and go cut with it and see how long she lasts. That is gonna be the only way to accurately determine the run time per tank.

Newer Equipment why, these work just fine so why not still use them? We really try not to spend taxpayers money unless necessary

nothing wrong with a good running 028, and like said before when using a saw you will not be under a full load a 100 percent of the time and 20min. run time is about par for any saw running a tank of fuel out differnce between the makes and models is the siz of the tanks....a 880 will hold 44 oz of fuel for example.

Engineers in your unit?

Cant a baseline be established converting fuel volume to BTU's / KW output?
Probably need to reduce the result to 75% or so for volumetric efficiency
And start your curve at about 35%(idle) to 100%(WOT)

Sounds like too darn much trouble to me....

I doubt you'd find a really big difference between most modern saws - bigger saws use more fuel but have larger tanks as well. I'd say 20 minutes +/- 5 is probably a fair neighborhood for most under average firewood-type bucking and limbing use though.

Really though there are way too many factors involved... Like asking how fast the same saw would cut a piece of 16" pine. It'll depend on how it's tuned, wha's being cut, operator experience/technique, chain sharpness, etc.

After you finish your service you should run for gov't office. I'd bet a campaign along the lines of the above quote would get you a vote :)
