RM is safety chain that reduces the risk of 'kickback'; where as RS does not have this built in protection and is more prone to 'kickback' especially by an untrained or inexperienced user. I recommend using the RM chain until you are comfortable and feel experienced with the saw. Then if you want a more 'aggressive' chain to work better for you, then go to the RS chain, fully aware of the fact that you are to always be on the alert when using a saw and wear safety gear, in spite of the many pictures I see on this site where all the pro's have on are helmets and ear muffs. IMHO, that is.

Well, 26RM is not neccessarily safety chain...26RM2 is. It is identified for sure by the triple humped tie straps which reduce kickback. Stihl suggests eevryone use low kickback chain, but once you've had the pro stuff, it's hard to go back, cause it sucks to cut with the low kick chain IMO. The difference between RM and RS is that the RS has chisel cutters...whereas the RM and RM2 have chipper or semi chisel cutters. Do you have any serious experiecne running a saw? If not go with teh safety chain...if you do, go with the 26RS.....all will be well if you use good sense and watch out espeically if you plunge cut and don't let the bar nose hit anything when youa re in a cut...it's that nose area of teh bar that is kickback prone.

Yeah I have a bunch of experience using my dads 028 we cut about 5 - 10 Cords per year, but I am pretty sure he is running the safe antikick back chain. I have had no problems with the RM chain, but I need some more chains and I wanted some opinions before I sunk more money into 2 or 3 more chains for my saw.

Use what you feel comfortable with....I'll stick to chisel. I must ask, does this 028 have a chain brake? If not I am probably out of line in saying pro saw chain is a good idea.

Stihl is crrently replacing the RS chain with what now is RSC. I have not compared
the two side by side yet, but the C probably stands for "cheap".

Cheap as in price? No, my mistake, you said Stihl :umpkin:.

The "C" is supposed to stand for Comfort... less vibration in the cut. Maybe my hands are shot, but I couldn't tell the difference. Seemed to cut just the same to me. Didn't do a side-by-side comparison though.

Where did you hear Stihl is going to quit making RS chain? I'm gonna have to buy a few spare rolls if this is true.

no the new loops have changed to RSC, I have not investigated further. I will corner
a Stihl rep tommorrow at the expo, but I fully expect the standard O. B.

We ordered (yesterday) and got RS loops today. May be just what was left over during the change. Lemme know what your Stihl rep says, I'll contact our supplier tomorrow and see what they say. Will RSK still be available?
